what is the special food in late game?

hi i wanted to ask about the special foods i've unlocked, the ones that are marked with a star, what do they do? are they just improved variants of the regular meals? i do not see something obviously different about those.

If you are referring to the meals with the red name and red star, they are meals necessary to complete one of the gems for the altar to access the twilight manor zone. You have to eat a certain number before you reach the portal (or maybe even before you reach lunar desert) to get the red gem. I think the # is 3 or 4.
