It's abandoned because the developer blamed his team for the slow pace of development, until eventually it all came crashing down, the game is now abandonware, no updates are coming, ever.

It's safe to assume the game is abandoned though, because there hasn't been a word from the dev since February 2021 as far as I know, I can't find anything anyway.

The latest announcement on the dev's website is the opening of the multiplayer beta, which obviously didn't work out too well.

Very sad, I remember liking this game when I played it back then, it feels so strange to me that such a wholesome game went down like this.

I don't think Forager was ever meant to be anything more than a game jam entry, and it just got way more attention than the creator ever intended, so he bit off more than he could chew in response. He clearly had issues handling the attention but that doesn't excuse the behavior that followed, both towards people he hired to help him and the way he treated his mods.

The game did turn out solidly, but he never should have tried to keep the promises he made early on, or he should have just chosen to go back on them. Some times it's okay to say no, or plans have changed. IMO the only thing it truly lacks is some kind of ending, so you know you beat it, instead of just running out of things to do and deciding that must be it.
