I've never seen Mining Rods as an early game tool TBH. I'd say in early game I don't really mind going around to mine things on my own. I feel like the Mining Rod recipe is pretty reasonable since by the time I unlock factories, things start to get expensive enough that I want to start automating the mining part, so the Electronics cost makes sense.
Although if I were in charge of determining the recipes I would make them cost Royal Steel instead of Electronics, but definitely not Steel like in pre-CU.
Aside from that, look into stockpiling droids as well via demon altar or purchasing, NEVER make your own droids. Way too pricey later on, and by the time you can even make your first one with mats, you should already be in a position to make your own droids. Droids are basically the player's portable mining rods, and you can get a seriously stupid large amount of them so long as you keep farming slime bosses and pumping hp into demon altars. From there, you can make a mining island with 4 quarries or so, set up maybe 6 power stations (should have enough mats from bomb farming a single quarry by this point), and then just afking with your droids taking down all of the nodes. By the next time you log on you should have a ton of resources to build more furnaces, more power stations, and especially more steel, electronics, etc. 7 hours after setting up my mining island, I had enough resources to make around 15 mining rods EASILY, with plenty left over. Mining rods in general tho are not really worth it unless you are endgame and just looking to automate stuff, Fire Rods, setting up your own farming areas, etc. are much more efficient than trying to keep every land empty as early as possible.
