Mining rod
hey guys/girls i was just wondering if anyone else thought the mining rod it a bit much to get. gotta get some plastic witch requires witch oil witch a offshore drill witch requires royal steel to make the obsidian (i have no idea how to get). then whatever the last thing is i didn't think the old mining rod recipe was not that bad or whatever to make could make a few early game to help get a few things. now early game feels like a slog to get though. are they meant to be that late game or what ever just seams a bit much maybe reverse it to what it was or make it cost steel and crystal witch seams fair and make sense

its not that hard to make all of that, esp end game converting hundreds of steal into gems and having multiple miners running with a quary going, only thing i think is really stupid would be spirit orb manufacturing cost

Post-Combat Update joiner here.

I've never seen Mining Rods as an early game tool TBH. I'd say in early game I don't really mind going around to mine things on my own. I feel like the Mining Rod recipe is pretty reasonable since by the time I unlock factories, things start to get expensive enough that I want to start automating the mining part, so the Electronics cost makes sense.

Although if I were in charge of determining the recipes I would make them cost Royal Steel instead of Electronics, but definitely not Steel like in pre-CU.

yeah royal steel is fair just annoying when you get just enough to make this thing then this thing just nice if you could have just one mining rod to help out like not mass mining rods just one

To get mining rods as soon as possible, I go for the quarry first so that I could get obsidian without opening the fire biome. My tech goes like this, economy > industry > storage > banking > sewing > from sewing, go all the way to the left of it unlocking drilling > from drilling go all the way down and you'll unlock deposit which unlock quarries. You'll need to do a bit of grinding, mainly of gems because that's mainly what you're going to lack because royal steel needs it, and you need royal steel to make the electronics. But that's ok, since you've already unlocked geology and prospecting which in turn solves your coal problems, and gives you a higher percentage of getting gems.

Best methods for mining early game is just stockpiling bombs. Once you get some lighthouses, manage to craft a slime sigil (or buy one), etc. Then you will have easily enough mats to make hundreds or even thousands of bombs. Even with base damage, 3 bombs or so are enough to take down even the big coal ore nodes (the ones that take up 4 spaces), and they knock every node within the radius.

Aside from that, look into stockpiling droids as well via demon altar or purchasing, NEVER make your own droids. Way too pricey later on, and by the time you can even make your first one with mats, you should already be in a position to make your own droids. Droids are basically the player's portable mining rods, and you can get a seriously stupid large amount of them so long as you keep farming slime bosses and pumping hp into demon altars. From there, you can make a mining island with 4 quarries or so, set up maybe 6 power stations (should have enough mats from bomb farming a single quarry by this point), and then just afking with your droids taking down all of the nodes. By the next time you log on you should have a ton of resources to build more furnaces, more power stations, and especially more steel, electronics, etc. 7 hours after setting up my mining island, I had enough resources to make around 15 mining rods EASILY, with plenty left over. Mining rods in general tho are not really worth it unless you are endgame and just looking to automate stuff, Fire Rods, setting up your own farming areas, etc. are much more efficient than trying to keep every land empty as early as possible.
