Spawns on Unbought Land Tiles
I've been trying to work through a DIY one-island challenge (I want to be able to expand the island by producing landfill), and I've noticed something that really stunts the ability of that playstyle to work:

Resources, animals, and mobs don't spawn on (large) grid tiles where you've placed landfill but haven't bought that land tile. So as you expand your island, the only thing you can do with those tiles is use quarries or farms.

It seems to me like I need to buy one tile for smiles to spawn, two for animals to spawn. That means I can never start the animal feed cycle, because I have no slime (beyond buying it from markets), nor can I upgrade my pickaxe or shovel.

Are these both known behaviors? Any way I can force the spawns?

If you want animals and slimes spawning play on the single island challenge map

Like I mentioned in the OP, I want to be able to expand the island by producing landfill, so the single island challenge map doesn't work.

It is intended to work that way. You have to play the Single Island Mode if you want spawns on your island. You can't get both, spawns and landfill, in one savefile.

Also you CAN upgrade your tools even on the map your playing without the natural spawns

We could allow Landfill/Bridges back into Single Island Challenge, but my thought was it would make the challenge a bit too easy? Since you can endlessly spawn. What do you guys think?

Can you make it a toggable select your own rules type of thing? Like player goes into "challenge mode" and before the game actually starts a menu pops up with options like "show timer yes or no" "allow bridges yes or no" etc (added bonus if there can be spawn rates for enemies/items of 'none, low, normal, high' - but that would understandable take a fair amount of testing).

If possible that would allow for greater expansion in the future and more variablity as players could set their own restrictions. It also has the potential to help players fine tune their own difficulty preferences. And it means the burden of balancing/finding new challenges isn't on you ;)

Yes, I do like the idea for world creation options but that would probably come later, whenever we revamp the world generation code (also to allow new lands and user-generated lands)

I think it would be cool to allow that kind of customization, for sure. I was approaching the single island challenge like the survival island or skyblock maps in Minecraft, expecting to be able to spin up growth faster and faster with a more restrictive start.

Alternatively, the triggers for mobs/animals could be altered to also account for... percentages of a map tile that has landfill on it, I guess?

thats too late endgame but you can buy 2 islands, you get things spawn(actually you can get animals by wizard scroll but nvm) and just with obliterator you can despawn the islands

I think the whole challenge of One Island Mode is getting things done with limited space. If you could increase the size of your island, you would no longer have limited space.
Adding some options for customisation would be cool though.

Or maybe that would be endgame thing, something like 5 electronics, 5 fiberglass and 10 plastics makes 1 landfills(at factory)
I hope with the summer update's new feature hard mode will change recipes

I think you could add it but make it so after making for example a 3x3 space of island, you get to the border of the map
