Cloud Chasers is a text-based adventure that incorporates survival elements, map exploration, and a flying mini-game. I think the game is pretty decent when it comes to resource management and storytelling, although the controls for the glider are a bit wonky. The goal is to get across the desert which includes 5 separate levels with randomly generated events. If one of your characters dies, you start over. However, the game is not particularly hard as I was able to beat it on the second try (in less than 1 hour on normal). Since many of the achievements are attached to unique events, it does have some replay value because you can't get everything in one run.

There are several different resources to keep track of such as water, glider structure, health, and status effects. Water is actually the main currency in the game, which is a really cool idea because you need to keep some of it to survive. Cloud Chasers has a good risk vs reward aspect where you constantly deciding if one of your resources is more valuable than another. There are many items that can be traded in the towns that you visit between the levels; you can keep unique items for random events to get a bigger reward, or you can just sell them in a desperate situation. In my opinion, the narrative was enjoyable because there are many interesting choices that you can make.

For a game that is only asking about $5, it has a decent narrative and the use of risk and reward. I think you need to be a completionist to get the full value from this title as there are many unique events and interactions. It did not give me much of a challenge, but I think it is fun enough for one or two runs.

At $4 this is a good game. Perma death rogue lite, FTL-lite, prequel to the excellent Airheart. However, it has very little action (passive glider flying avoiding bad buys and their bullets) to collect water aka cash.

I completed it in 4 hours and don't really feel compelled to play again soon. There are items that are worthless except for fufilling dialogue options. There are a few basic upgrades for your glider that make the water collection mini game much easier to almost trivial when the gilder is fully upgraded.

Overall, it's not nearly as good as a game as Airheart the twin stick shooter. It was still fun if a bit shallow.

Cloud Chasers was an interesting little survival title in the vein of games like Flame in the Flood, where it's more of a linear experience despite the necessity of crafting and collecting stuff, exploration, etc..

It is also a kind of charming game in a way.


Basically, there are two worlds in this game, the one on the ground, comprised on the non elite, and one in the skies, comprised of the elite. On the ground, the world is water starved and perpetual desert, with clouds providing the primary means of collecting water, using specialized gliders to fly through clouds, gathering water as they go. As you might imagine, the elite prefer to hold on to this resource jealously, resulting in people needing to be fast and opportunistic to collect water for themselves. Water is thus also the world's accepted currency, with bartering being resolved in liters of water.

You play as a father and daughter, trying to find their way off the desert surface and to the world of opportunity and water above. Basically.


Gameplay is consistent with other games of the genre: resource gathering, exploration, and quite a bit of dialogue fueled decisions. There isn't really combat outside of avoiding enemies while in your flyer. Everything else is resolved via the aforementioned dialogue choices. You will be able to trade nostalgic or otherwise generally useless items for practical things like flyer upgrades, backpacks to hold more, various medications, and general one use, encounter specific items such as guns, axes, liquor, etc...

Other than that, you are really just wandering from desert town to desert town on your way to try and sneak into the world above. You will have to manage your water a lot, since it is both literally and figuratively your lifeblood in the game. It is also a roguelike inasmuch as a death results in a game over.

Speaking of game over, whether you die or make it to the end, all your choices will be presented to you in the end. This has more in common with Curious Expedition than, say, a Telltale game.


The graphics are fairly minimalist overall. They look nice, but the same features will repeat and there isn't really a lot in the way of assets being used overall. However, the cutscenes (presented as full page images with dialogue subtitles) were nicely done and each presented something fun. Still, there wasn't really much of that overall, but what is there is nice.


As I reflect on the audio a couple days after playing, I am hard pressed to remember anything specific that stood out. It was all nice enough, but nothing that will stick with you.


I wouldn't call this a great game by any stretch of the imagination, but it was fun and has a weird sort of charming quality to it. I didn't find it to be very difficult on normal, so easy has to be legit easy if I was to guess and hard probably isn't that bad either. I am hard pressed to see how people spent twenty+ hours in a game that basically took me two hour to complete with seven deaths. I'm thinking an achievement hunter would conclude their time in around six to eight hours, tops. That said, it was a quality two hours and I think the price is fair to the experience. The game doesn't really have any issues that I can think of, the pacing was nice, the story was decent, and it was an overall good game. Recommended at the asking price.

The short of it: A polished Oregon Trail-style adventure with a story about parenthood and survival that will tug at your heart if you're willing to read all the text.

Cloud Chasers follows Francisco and Amelia as they leave home, crossing the desert to reach The Spire, which will send them to some unseen sky city. Along the way they harvest clouds, eat cacti, and scavenge what they can.

The game is visually solid; nothing fancy, but it's the right detail to get its point across and keep things clear. I did have a bit of "what's that do?" with the UI here and there, mostly in the cities. Easy to figure out, but symbols aren't all immediately obvious. Sound and music are good but don't seriously stand out, and if there are multiple harvesters on the screen the game gets LOUD.

The cloud harvesting is the only "action" bit to the whole game, flying around as you dodge machines and bullets, and once you get the hang of the controls it plays well. Upgrading your glider has a very clear effect, to where a fully upgraded one is a bit tough to handle.

Everything else is done through text and simple taps. The design is basically mobile-first, which leads to a slight recommendation of "buy it there, not here". The PC platform doesn't seem to add too much, and with runs topping out around the 45-60 minute range, it's a mobile-sized session as well.

The story is really what the game's about. It's told through little interactions between Francisco and Amelia as they cross the desert, as well as their interactions with others. When you finish a run, either by death or success, you get a considerable text dump. It's a little overwhelming. The setting is clearly an analog/metaphor/whatever you'd call it for immigrants crossing into the US, and the storytelling makes for probably the most sympathetic look at that struggle I've seen in games.

You'll quickly encounter repeat events, and a lot of your success is a bit arbitrary in an annoying roguelike way. But it's clear there are several endings, plus a lot of small story-building interactions to be found. Come into it for clever action or a wide breadth of content and you may be disappointed; come in for a strong story and you'll be pleased.

Cloud Chasers – Journey of Hope is a neat idea, and contains some very clever parts. Unfortunately in the process of putting them together something has come unstuck, and the entire experience isn’t being delivered. There is still a lot to engage with, but it will take players with a bit of fortitude to stick it out until the end.

Cloud Chasers - Journey of Hope is a great rogue like adventure game with RPG elements.

You are travelling from town to town with your daughter trying to reach your destination. Water is your Achilles heel and you need to try and get it whenever you can. The main method is cloud harvesting with your glider that you upgrade whenever possible. Along the way you encounter various events and each leg is punctuated by a visit to a different city where you can heal and trade. If one of you dies it's all over!

It really is a great game and it's been made to quite a high standard. Graphics, gameplay, and story are all terrific which bring us to the next point, the price. It's only $5! There is no excuse to miss this title. Take a look at my video to see for yourself...
