Assault rifle needs slide release
Using advanced reloading, the service pistol has a slide release feature (just push the mag release button again when the fresh mag is in and the slide closes without having to pull on the slide manually).

But oddly the assault rifle, which seems to be based on the M4/AR15, doesn't have a slide release. So you have to manually charge it every time since it doesn't have a slide catch/release, which seems odd as the real life one has a slide catch/release and wasn't really meant to be charged every time - it's awkward having to pull the charging handle on the top of the rifle every time you run dry. If it was a rifle like the AKM which wasn't designed with a slide catch/release it'd make more sense, since the charging handle is designed to be more easily accessible and charged after running dry.

To be 100% realistic there'd be an option to push the slide release on the left side of the rifle, but I feel like this would be a bit much to ask for when it's so close to release ;)

For further evidence devs, here's a youtube vid of a UK firearms expert (reacting to a different game Back 4 Blood) discussing the AR15/M4 style reload with the slide release: https://youtu.be/6C2NSRtvkm8?t=987

TL;DR - the assault rifle should have the slide release mechanic like the pistol (push the mag release button again to release the slide, like the service pistol)

Did you actually manage to find the M4? I thought it was not available in the beta since I could only find the AK, shotgun and MAC-11 lol.

If the M4 doesn't have have a bolt release like you say then I agree, it should be an option, no question about it and it's not a huge request anyway.
Adding onto gun realism, it's kind of funny how we fire the AK when the safety is on and the bolt pull distance is way too short, I'd say we should be able to pull the bolt at least 1-2 centimeters further back. This short pull makes it kind of awkward if you're used to reloading AK-style guns in other VR games.

I played with bots on recruit so I could get M4 (because I rolled some good upgrades I wanted to install). Guns spawn in that room behind the door with keycard and teammates usually sweep it faster than I realize they found the card.

The first try I managed to get M4 and thought that the rest of the match is a breeze since it's the easy difficulty. But the game had other plans as I dumped a magazine after magazine into the last boss. That ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ was invincible, bugged. I finally died and ragequit when found out that inventory didn't save; haven't played since lol

I hear you, I had him become invincible twice but I did keep my inventory the first time, not really sure why or how.

Yeah I played solo, the M4 spawned in the locked room that you need the keycard for. Not bad, but just some weird design choices... like the service pistol has the whole one-in-the-chamber thing (drop a mag early and it keeps one bullet in the chamber), but the M4 doesn't and needs to be charged every time. Doesn't act like a closed bolt or even an open bolt weapon

It would be really nice to have a working bolt release on the AR. It's even modeled on the gun. It's always a bit disappointing when VR games don't let you operate bits of the gun you're holding when they do such a good job in other respects. I think this particular feature is a really nice fit in VR especially - the bolt release is a paddle that you press down, which can be represented by letting you touch it with the palm of your virtual hand.

In a related note, I would really appreciate the option to have separate buttons for dropping magazines and the slide release. I don't know if this is a bug or just me being clumsy, but I find that I often go to eject a spent magazine and somehow simultaneously release the slide. Having these functions on separate inputs would eliminate this kind of problem and be more realistic for how the guns operate.

Took me around 20 hours to understand there was a last round system on some firearms, within the game. The lack of understanding is due to the fact the slide/bolt release was the same button for mag release. Understanding this was a huge game changer for those who have some understanding of firearms and prefer manual reloads.

As of current state of the game, manual reloads serves as a disadvantage in nightmare.
I hope to see in the future, Assault Carbine gets a bolt catch system. It would be so satisfying to load a fresh mag and paddle slap, sending a round in the chamber.

I dont see the real advantage for manual reload. I understand its realitic, but other games use some Boni like 100 % more dps or something. even when its 10 % I think some People will change. I lost 2 - 3 seconds for manuall reload at this time and Its so much easyer to grab another Weapon and keep shooting.
More Money is not the Driving force in this Game.

I believe that the "advanced reload" system is deliberately designed to take longer to reload, and as a reward you are meant to get +50% harvest...or something like that. Making it easier to reload would mean that they would have to drop the harvest reward, wouldn't it?
