also use assualt on enemies trying to capture or to cover more ground in a given turn if it doesn't put you at a disadvantage

If you're on the PC version, turn motion blur and Vsynch off. You'll get a crisper image and since this game doesn't have rapid camera movement, you don't ever need to worry about screen tearing.
If you're on PC, use the spacebar to confirm selections instead of clicking them with the mouse. In other words, select your unit with the mouse, click where you want the unit to move/attack, then just tap spacebar a couple times. This is more efficient than clicking on everything.
As for gameplay tips, try to take note of which units have high veterancy, repair/ heal them, and use them to initiate attacks.
Always make use of the facing mechanic. Rear > sides > front. Makes a big difference. Also remember to face your units properly after you move them in case they come under attack.
Hover your mouse over enemy units to see their move/attack range and hold Backspace on your own units to do the same.
