My Review of Shadow of the Tomb Raider 🏹

Like all the Tomb Raider games before it, this one was a thrilling adventure. However, I couldn't help but notice that there seemed to be less combat in this instalment compared to its predecessors. I found myself exploring ruins more often and facing fewer conflicts with Trinity or the cult. While this isn't necessarily a bad thing, a bit more challenge would have been welcome.

Overall, the story was as compelling as ever, with intriguing characters that kept me engaged. The puzzles were enjoyable, although they felt a bit easier and somewhat similar to those in previous games. The environment was stunning, and I loved the flashbacks to Lara's childhood and the Croft manor. Learning about the history of each artifact was educational and fun; I picked up some interesting facts about Maya and Inca cultures just by playing the game.

The underwater swimming and climbing mechanics were on a different level, adding to the excitement and hype.

On the whole, I thoroughly enjoyed this game and highly recommend it.

The action-adventure game Shadow of the Tomb Raider developed by Crystal Dynamics takes you on an adventure deep into the Peruvian jungles.

After denying Trinity to lay their hands on the divine source, Lara Croft accompanied by her friend Jonah chases them to the South American continent in order to prevent the evil organization to claim the box of Ix Chel. Her journey is unlike any ordinary filled with a lot of struggles however she finds herself meeting some friendly people in recluse civilisation who help her along the way.
Shadow of the Tomb Raider can be played by anyone since the difficulty is very customizable. The large map guiding the player through the Peruvian jungles is highly detailed creating astonishing sceneries. I want to particularly point out the variety of sceneries underwater. Not only are the textures and models gorgeous but also the ambient sounds thus creating a realistic feeling of the environment. Through out the adventure you will come across a lot of optional relics and documents which tell their own stories. Furthermore, there are several tombs containing challenging puzzles which award you with a skill once solved. All of them but especially the DLC tombs from the definitive upgrade have a very atmospheric feeling. The soundtrack is right on once more to create the perfect feelings in the right moments. Unlike the prior games the sounds are not overdone, and the developers did not include the obnoxious looting sound from its predecessors. Hostile encounters are made very heterogenic and enjoyable by adding interaction with the environment to meet the play style of different players. Unfortunately, the main storyline of the game feels very railroaded with no room of variety but is still very intriguing. On the other hand, there are a lot of side missions revealing more information about the culture and characters. Opposed to the previous Tomb Raider games, you have some sort of hub where you as a player can feel safe from dangers and take a break from the uncertain.

This game is very well made with stunning graphics, an engaging soundtrack and a vast map which just wants to be explored but unfortunately the storyline is very railroaded. I recommend Shadow of the Tomb Raider to anyone who just wants to be challenged by the puzzles the tombs offer or just likes walking through the world enjoying the scenery he is presented while experiencing a very captivating story.

I don't usually (never) criticize the previous Tomb Raider reboot series because, in my eyes, they are nearly perfect. However, my experience with Shadow of the Tomb Raider was different. Initially, the game seemed fine, but as I progressed, it became insufferable. Despite this, my love for the series and Lara Croft pushed me to complete more than 50% of the main game.
The game excels in areas such as stealth combat, which I prefer, and the final battle was particularly enjoyable. Overall, I give Shadow of the Tomb Raider an 8.7/10. If the story had been more engaging from the moment I set foot in Paititi, I would have rated it closer to a solid 9 or even 9.5. The graphics are stunning and truly a work of art, and I look forward to playing the DLC chapters.
