And do you have any crash report located at:
X:\Users\YourName\Documents\Shadow of the Tomb Raider\
?
shadow and rising of the tomb raider both don't work. It starts loading 3 seconds then it stops I don't even see anything
Let's start with the basic stuff that'll take just few moments to check out.
First, make sure the game is using right GPU.
1. Go to NVIDIA Control Panel and locate '3D Settings' menu on the left side of the screen.
2. Select 'Manage 3D Settings', go to 'Program Settings' tab and find 'Shadow of the Tomb Raider'
3. Make sure the preferred GPU is your RTX 3080 card.
Second, make sure the game have a system permission to create new files. Sometimes Windows Update (or other stuff) can mess with those settings, so it's worth checking out:
1. When you're on Desktop, double click on 'This PC' and select your Windows disc.
2. Right click on it and select 'Properties'.
3. Now go to 'Security' section and make sure that 'SYSTEM' and your admin account have all the permissions checked.
4. Do the same thing with the game .exe file.
Third, try running the game in DX11 mode. When you start the game on Steam and you see the launcher, instead of 'Play' click on 'Preferences' and when you're in the 'Display' section simply uncheck the 'DirectX 12' option. Also, make sure that the launcher lists your RTX as the GPU.
Years ago I also heard about some issues with the full screen mode on certain graphic cards and although I really don't think this is the case here you can also uncheck the 'Full screen' option.
Try running the game now. If it doesn't work go to
X:\Users\YourName\Documents\Shadow of the Tomb Raider\
once again and see if any crash report is available now.
Number four: since you're saying the game USED TO work it's surely worth to check out if the older builds are working.
1. Locate 'Shadow of the Tomb Raider' in your Steam Library, right click on it and select 'Preferences'
2. Now go to 'Beta' section on the left side of the menu and then pick 'build 453 - build 453' and wait until Steam downloads proper files.
3. Run the game and check out if it works. If it doesn't, then once again check out if any crash report is available now.
Let me know if any of these tips helped.
Hi there, i just bought this game alongside its DLC's, but upon starting it through steam it just initializes and then the start button reverts into "play"....i've tried starting it trough SOTTR.exe (with admin privilages) and the error which im getting right now is "failed to initialize steam"
although it says im connected to cloud services on steams side....
the dump file? txt is created in my documents after every try to start
the bottom 2 lines says:
19:57:43:133 (00008792) > [SwapChain] Successfully initialized.
19:57:43:133 (00008792) > [NxApp] PreInit successful.
could this be an 1 in a million chance upon buying a game that steam services is down or something? truly an first time for me.2
edit1, changed perms on C:/ and D:/ to admin privilages on all users and now the dump file says this;
20:19:11:161 (00004672) > [SwapChain] Initializing...
20:19:11:161 (00004672) > [DXGI] Initializing...
although the behavior of the "play" button on steam behaves the same, start->initializing(turns blue) and reverts to play
-Reverted perms but the dump file says the same...
I highly doubt it has something to do with Steam services, but just to make sure look for the following lines in the dump file (numbers and dates are going to be different obviously):
20:49:08:572 (00014672) > [Steam] Initializing.
20:49:08:883 (00014672) > [Steam] Successfully initialized.
If you can find them, then we can definitely rule it out.
After the DXGI initilazing you should get an info that the file has been created ( '[DXGI] Successfully initialized' ), so go to:
X:\Windows\System32
and look for a file named 'dxgi.dll' there. Check its permissions (just like you did with the files mentioned above, but do NOT change anything yet) and tell me how it looks.
EDIT: BTW, could you say few words about your specs? Especially what kind of GPU are you using? It could be really helpful info, because in a lot of cases with this game, the solutions could be... unusual, to say the least.
Hi, steam is fine according to the txt...
i found the dxgi file and its perms are read and read&write on 5/6 users
only user which allows it completely is"trustedinstaller"
My specs are:
win10 home
Intel i7-9700K @ 3.6ghz
rog maximus xi hero
G.skill 16gb x2 ripjaws V, ddr4 @3200mhz, cl16, 1.3
GeForce RTX 2070 WINDFORCE 8gb
Thanks for the specs, that's really helpful and we can try something right away. First and foremost, make sure the game runs on right card in NVIDIA Control Panel:
It's RTX 3080 in OP's case, in yours you should obviously see RTX 2070 there.
Then go to GeForce Experience and when you are on the main page find and click on 'Shadow of the Tomb Raider'. Wait for a second until the app prepares all the settings and click on the wrench icon next to green 'Optimize' button. Pick right resolution and more importantly, in the 'Display' section pick 'Borderless window' and save the settings.
If you are using ANSEL, disable it (you can obviously turn in back on later if you want to; there used to be some issues with it so it's worth giving a shot).
Try running the game now. If it still doesn't work we're gonna bypass the launcher (since it doesn't work anyway). Right click on 'Shadow of the Tomb Raider' in your Steam Library, at the bottom of the 'General' tab you'll see 'Startup Options' and the text box. Type:
-nolauncher
Exit the menu and run the game. If that won't help please check if there are some new additions in the dump file, maybe we'll find something more there.
Hi, thanks for the support.
In the geforce experiance application upon clicking SOTTR, the settings doesn't load (says a restart of the game might solve it)....so i have no default settings, nor can i click the optimize button...therefore that option is a no go...
I've read some other posts about this problem and i have already disabled Nvdia shadowplay so the ansel thing im guessing is in there with it...so it isnt on.
One more thing to note about the geforce experiance is that i get the launcher when clicking play through it...although at this point i had already wrote "-nolauncher" on steam launch options....this is getting wierder and wierder..
Oh, okay. This really IS weird but in the same time it can also be really useful.
If you're getting a launcher via GeForce Experience then go to 'Settings' there, on a 'Display' tab disable DirectX 12, then go to 'Graphics' tab and pick the lowest settings possible. Click 'OK' and try running the game from the launcher. Also, check out the dump file again and look for lines with command '[Validate Settings]'. Can you find them there?
Nvm, the thing i thought was the launcher was in fact an popup from steam with the SOTTR logo on it just stating it's starting, and then disappears as the logo does in steam library.
The dump file has not changed whatsoever, i removed the string which specified windows version and such fyi.

I'm thinking about other things to do and to be honest with you, I'm slowly running out of ideas. There are still few things that may be worth giving a shot, though.
First of all, try reinstalling DirectX. From the dump file it seems like this is a cause of the problem (dxgi.dll is part of the DirectX environment), but in your case I can't figure out how or why. I should have asked about this before, but do you have ANY issues with other games?
Other things to do that won't take long:
1. Try disabling ALL the DLCs and run the game again. Delete the '-nolauncher' command before you do that.
2. Years ago some GeForce users had a problem after one of the game updates when it was constantly crashing for no reason and one of the workarounds (because let's face it, it's not a proper solution) was rolling back the game to build 236.1. I know the combination of old build and no DLCs doesn't sound too good, but could you try that?
And one question: are you using some sort of antivirus or firewall software (I mean different than Windows Defender and official Microsoft stuff).
EDIT: You know what, I just thought of something. What is the size of your Windows pagefile?
SOLVED
did a reinstall of windows through "system restore" and sure enough, it automatically updates the game in question through steam (saw it installing directx among others...)
now the dump file exceeds those previous lines with the next 2 being:
20:04:59:460 (00002888) > [DXGI] Created DXGIFactory1
20:04:59:460 (00002888) > [DXGI] Successfully initialized.
Edit1:
-I tried everything mentioned besides the system restore and to no avail (even collapsed my 2 seperate steam folders into 1 on 1 drive) and reinstalled steam.
-tried the command sfc/scannow? and it found some corrupted files and restored them but that didn't work either.
-tried reinstalling video drivers
-tried updating to most recent windows updates.
-disabled my firewall/antivirus (zonealarm)
There we go, seems like this indeed was DirectX related issue. Maybe 'Shadow of the Tomb Raider' (and 'Rise of the Tomb Raider' as well, as the same issue happens there for some people) requires some sort of very specific version of DX? I've seen that happening with NVIDIA PhysX, when the game won't start no matter what until you install the old version of the driver, maybe it's somewhat similar here? Interesting stuff.
Anyway, I'm really glad you got it working. Enjoy the game!
