I don't understand why I am getting this error now. I used to play this game with a 3060ti 8GB max settings 1440p w/ mods. Now I can't even run the game for more than 20 sec without crashing! WTF is going on? Driver issue?

Same here with RTX 4080, always on the same point

I found a fix, so it's an NVIDIA driver issue for me. I had 572.16 before but rolled back to a driver from dec 10th 2024 (566.36) and game runs smooth and no issues even with mods direct X12, not sure what the deal is, but that's what I found to fix it :)
Yes, can confirm. Downgrade is quite easy as you can choose the older driver in the Nvidia App/Driver.. scrolling down to the last installed and choose reinstall at the right dropdown-menu
With the new driver, turn off RT shadows then it shouldn't crash
The Geforce 572.16 driver has a open issue

[Shadow of the Tomb Raider] Game may crash when Ray Traced Shadow quality is set to High or Ultra.

Set it to medium as of now. Can't give away DLSS 4's transformer model which is a bliss.
Had the issue yesterday. I hadn't played the game for a couple of months but had kept my drivers updated.

It doesn't used to be like this but it's now difficult to find the list of all released drivers in the past, on nvidia's wesbsite. However, If you know the version you need, just google something like this: "version 565 driver nividia windows". The first result should be an official page of the nvidia website with a download link to this version: https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/drivers/details/235772/

And that's the version I actually had to go back to (Oct 2024) to get my game to work again.

You have to run on DX11 not DX12. The game won't run well on DX12. Who knows why.

Probably the game is terribly optimized. I can run Cyberpunk on psycho everything with my 4080 super while this game makes my GPU scream (and it's only utilizing 24% VRAM)

It's the NVIDIA drivers since 572.16 that made this game unstable with DX12 and RT. 566.36 is the only driver as far as I tested that works with no issues.
maybe I'll roll back drivers

Let me know if it works, try 566.36 from dec 4th (2024)
I find driver version 561.09 the best for all games on my RTX 4090

True. I've thought so, that the problem comes with new driver, but when i went back 1 before the new one, the one that i've been playing on 20 hours of the game and everything was nice, it didn't work. The driver u mentioned is working, but it's rly weird that i had to go back so far, like 5 drivers before. When it was clearly working just 1 driver before. Thanks for the tip. Cheers
Nvidia drivers, not ur gpu.
So it looks like the latest drivers may have fixed it. I'm running on Ultra Ray Tracing in the village, and it doesn't seem to be crashing again. Just a quick test mind you, but so far, it seems to be fine.

Edit: Nevermind, scratch that. Gave me hope and then dashed them across the rocks. Argh...

lol yeah, for some reason maxed out RT for shadow of the tomb raider doesn't get along with the newer NVIDIA drivers from all the testing I've done recently. Very strange :steamfacepalm:

I tested out the 572.60 driver yesterday and game still crashed on ultra settings RT. So what I ended up doing was dropping down RT to "medium", game seemed to work just fine without a single issue afterwards. Tbh, you don't notice a difference from medium & ultra RT. Game still looks great :)

Might try out the just released 572.70 later, but I expect the same issue to persist with ultra RT.
