How do you ward off Piranhas?

It seems I am stuck in an underwater cavern near the City of the Serpent. Each time the game reloads and I make a move, I am immediately attacked and killed. Rinse and repeat.

Wherever there are piranhas there are usually spots to hide from them, underwater weed growths that show up in white if you use survival instincts. They don't have a massive field of view, and there's a musical cue when they're looking at you, and then another when they actually spot you/swarm.

If they spot you you're done for unless you can get out of the water. Most places you cannot so you have to remain unseen. They tend to swim in a circle so watch them and as they pass swim onto the next patch of reed bed. Once you are 3ish meters away they won't notice you. I took some perception plants before getting into water so I could see if there were Piranhas in there but I guess Survival Instinct would do the same thing.

Avoid them. Wait for them to pass by, by hiding in seaweed. If they are at the surface of the water, you can swin below them if its deep enough, just keep your distance.

However, when you encounter them later where there are no weeds to hide in, wait for them to pass, then dive deep below them, and hug the bottom of the lake.

some places, they are ruthless, try to go around the corners and swim close to the ground.

I'm late to this discussion, but oh well; I need to rant.

They're easy enough to avoid when they're first encountered swimming through the narrow passageways filled with weeds to hide in, but in the giant underwater cavern (Kawaq Yaku) where there are like 10 schools swimming around, they're hard as hell.

It's a BS enemy too because piranhas don't just attack swimmers like this. Lara would have to be clearly injured, struggling to swim, and bleeding profusely to actually draw their attention IRL. Instead in that cavern, if you're anywhere within 50 feet of them and they spot you, you're done. There's no fighting them off or escaping. You get to watch her get eaten alive and then restart from you last save. There are effectively no weeds to hide in and swimming up or down to try to pass over/below doesn't seem to work. I've been trying to get the treasure chest in there for 20 minutes and the slightest movement away from the sunken temple with the air hole results in death.

Far be it from me to to complain about something unrealistic in a fantasy game about supernatural relics and burial chambers filled with complex traps and puzzles, but the piranhas -- attacking a healthy swimmer with no gaping wounds pouring blood into the water -- is f'ing nonsense.

That said I am trying to reach the treasure chest from the exit (coming from the Airfield Dirt Road camp), so maybe going through there the original way will make it easier.
