RTX ON vs OFF comparison slider
Hi,

I just made a slider comparison to see how rtx is exactly.

Jungle

Interior

Interior 2

The FORGE DLC

Now you can see what it does.. It's kinda big but it's only shadows... is DLSS not activated you get HUUGE fps drop from 100 to 30..
I was expecting more than just shadows but whatever.

Edit: 23/03
After a bunch of tests and comparisons that i'm not going to show you this time because it takes times actually ^^, i decided to let shadows on ultra but without RTX because my toughts are that it looks better without it.

and we waited so long for this....

Global Illumination along with the shadows would have been a really nice change for waiting 6 months.

Which one is ON and which one if OFF?

I can see differences, but both have good and bad bits imo. But in the first part of the benchmark, the shadows do look much better with RTX on

Yes. Shadows do look better. But no overall image quality upgrade. I don't think RTX-Shadow is worth turning on, cuz the impact is wayyy to big.

almost regretted sticking with amd. but with this side by side comparison my regrets have faded. is this what the infamous all new visual over 9000 upgrader called ray tracing looks like? Just a very small upgrade in visual fidelity for a massive performance impact.
I don't think forest and vegetation is quite the best thing to use to make a comparison :-/. Probably something with surfaces with lots of potential for reflection and light scatter.

Either the market at the beginning of the game, or one of the open areas with lots of water and a waterfall might show it's capabilities a bit better :-/

I'll make 2 other comparison and i'll put them in my original message, stay tuned

Ray tracing will be coming to the GTX 1000 series in April.

AMD are also going to be using Ray tracing in the future so get excited :)

I made one that highlights areas with noticeable differences. You can really tell on Laura's gear casting shadows on her body, the shop now having accurate shadows from the interior lights, sunlight shining through the holes on the egg crate, and the sharp ends of the flooring casting shadows too.

On vegetation, individual leaves now cast shadows on other leaves too. There are so many more shadows that it's understandable why performance is affected so heavily.

I just added 2 more sliders. It's even worse in interiors. The only scene where it seem good is in the village as they demonstrated before. I don't want to go there because we can already see it on the internet and i don't want to play again the prologue just to get there x)

I assure you i did not messed up with the settings, sometimes RTX OFF look better...!

Vilhjalmr, i can't see your slider it's blank

Mmm... Interior 2 looks better with RTX Off...

Look for area light sources, that is where RT shadow is actually useful, all those scenes has a single direct light source from a sun. RTX is not going to make everything better, you need to know where to look for it.

After playing on my 2080 Ti @ 4K, DLSS makes a noticeable difference by virtually eliminating shimmer and aliasing over using TAA yet yielding more FPS. There is a very slight blur that I think is a trade of worth making, especially as I'm playing on my TV and can compensate with a tiny bit of sharpness. With RTX Shadows set to High and all other settings Maxed out I get a stable 60fps with only compromise of Level of Detail set to High.

This, you don't want to show caves and foliage as those areas are those where there the impact will be negligible. You want multiple light sources, reflective surfaces and areas where plenty of shadow can be cast. hence why i suggested the market (where the festival is happening) at the beginning.

I can see where you are coming from, however if you look at the overall scene, with RTX off, the only way that you would see a scene looking like that is if there was a light source behind the camera. With RTX on, the impression of what you would actually see is much more correct, as there is only the one primary light source. You can see this results in the shadow of pillar looking more accurate.

No, this is what ray traced shadows look like. Its basically just Super-Ultra shadows. These screenshots don't do it justice. However, I'm not sure its worth enabling even with a 2080 Ti at 1440p.

Ray traced global illumination is the real holy grail, and we may be about one generation away from it. It's pretty cool. Instead of acting all jaded, you should be happy that rendering technology is being pushed forward, rather than just MOAR FPS
