Why doesn't Laura speak Spanish?
It is really strange and off putting Laura speaks English when asking people who speak only Spanish and maybe their local language questions. It comes across as her being arrogant. I get that they probably only hired an English speaking voice actor only to save on the budget.

This was problematic to me when I played the game. Although I didn't think she was arrogant, it did pull me out of the game and effect my immersion while playing. If Laura is speaking English that means all the people can understand, but instead of speaking English they instead choose to speak Spanish to someone speaking English?!? It makes no sense.

But it probably was this way because of the cost of voice actors and all that.

if you want the locals to speak in your game language you can change that in the audio settings. That makes it less strange to me.

There are other languages being spoken in the game as well, which is probably why they didn't have Camilla try to re-read her dialogue in three languages. It probably would have been better for her to just not say anything to the random NPCs.

BS thread but true too. Considering Lara's globetrotting history from childhood to adult you'd think she'd have at least 5 languages established, especially Spanish, which on a global scale is one of the easier. Wonder if she speaks Esperanto?

She hardly speaks to anyone when she visits all these places though, and most of the time it's quite remote and there aren't many people around anyway - just animals. She's more likely to develop sixth sense powers like telepathy or intuition through her travelling experiences.

Oh look a dinosaur! Better get back to that Rosetta Stone course in Basic Spanish now

The real question is.
The local people understand her 'Questions in English, and reply's with their local language..'
Like.. if you think about it. Some1 is asking you a question in Englsih, would you be so 'arrogant' to answer the question in your own local language?

And Lara understand them very well too. So you would ask yourself, why didn't Lara ask them in their local language.. :P

Seeing as this game has various dubs, it's mostly the reason as to why you don't have her talking in another language.

For most hardg*y dubbing countries they tend to change the content entirely to suit the intended audience (i.e native speakers where the dub is being made who don't know about anything or anything) when things like these happen. Which is why almost anything dubbed is pretty cringe and/or nonsensical. You have the same issue when something gets westernized, but because the target audience is dumb and ignorant (because they're dumb) they don't know any better. Because their entire existence is about consuming <insert product here>.

Besides, most people get confused if it's not in their native language regardless if you play with subtitles or not, same goes for the immersive voice-overs. But it's there for immersive reasons regardless if it makes sense or not.

I.e if Americans are having a Spanish language lesson in school but the dub is made for Russians, then you end up with Russians having a Russian language lesson in school instead, regardless if it makes sense or not. Most often times stuff like this used to be cut or replaced entirely with something else. Or worse, you hear them overdubbing the original language and they answer is Russian because it's dumb but the target audience don't know nor ever will know any better (as mentioned above).

I love the idea of dub in various languages. It offers a lot of immersion. All she would had to do realistically is learn to pronounce in 2 other languages and speak the lines. The voice actor wouldn't need to fully understand what she is saying, just the emotion behind it.

You guys know there is a setting in game menu to keep dialog in a specific language (uncheck the immersion crap).
This all thread is BS. I bet you also complain about SW and how Han Solo / Chewbacca both speaking their own language and have no problem with that.
Also there is an option to mute the voice and rely only on text for more "immersive" gameplay.

No, its really not. If you are going to offer immersion mechanics in your game you need to go all out or don't offer it. One of the reasons I like this game is because of the immersion in its world.

It would have been so cool to have Laura speak British inflected Spanish and then try her hand at communicating in Mam, Quechua, and Yucatec. Or maybe have Abby translating via an ear-piece or something. I hope they do something like this in the next game.

Please tell me this is a joke. No one speaks British.

And who is that Laura you guys keep talking about?
I wrote British inflected Spanish, as in, Spanish with a british accent. British as in 'british english.'

Make sure you do that in your next game. Till then be happy with what you have.
Maybe it's lost in translation the term immersion because I have no idea how immersive a game can be with a British native Lara Croft speaking Spanish in the game "sombra del asaltante de la tumba". Or go even for more immersive and change the name too: Laura Granja

Actually I can not switch to any dub except English. No matter if I try from the main menu, in game, or the launcher.
