If you want much more action with amost no puzzles and almost just basic scavenger exploration, Rise of the Tomb Raider.
If you want even more action without any puzzle and just basic scavenger exploration, TR 2013.
In other words:
Rise is a better Uncharted-like game that tries in just some moments to pretend to be a Tomb Raider, TR 2013 is a better linear shooter Uncharted style that dont even pretend to be a Tomb Raider aside from the title and from having Lara Croft, Shadow is a better Tomb Raider.
...
If you really want metroidvania exploration and puzzling AND dont mind very outdated and most certainly very cluncky gameplay to today standards, all the classic TRs starting from the first one from 1996.
Rise and 2013 were just 3rd person cover shooters.
Shadow have many "acceptable", Rise have just a little and 1 acceptable, TR 2013 have none.
Combat was always there at all Tomb Raiders but "no exploration and puzzling" is like saying basketball is just throwing balls to the basket while standing still, or football/soccer is just kicking the ball to the goal while standing still.
Obviously you will score a lot more this way but, the core gameplay of both, basket and football/soccer is lost.
Taking "only 1 aspect of the game, making it completely linear and just telling a story dont make it a Tomb Raider as before 2013, Tomb Raider core gameplay was always the exploration and puzzling (not "scavenger exploration at open areas" only as what TR 2013 have).
TR 2013 is the best linear shooter Uncharted style.
Rise is a better Uncharted-like game that tries in just some moments to pretend to be a Tomb Raider.
Shadow is a better Tomb Raider.
It knew what it wanted to be, a tight, linear, encounter-based 3rd person shooter with a cinematic approach in an open enough map, and it did it just fine. On the easy side , sure, but not a single inch of that world felt wasted.
Rise plays well, stealth sections can be fun but 80% of the map is filler. Like bruh you can literally run from one side of the level to the other on a straight line, nothing to stop you and that's the next story segment. It aged better than TR2013 which feels clunky and tutorial-ish in comparison, but I'm still facepalming at the amount of money they wasted into so much throwaway content.
Shadow was the same deal but possibly worse: even less significant gameplay, mechanics put there without content to justify their existance, more cinematic annoyances and Lara is everyone's the Errand Girl. Yuk.
Also, no: collectable hunting is not exploration, so claiming that Shadow was a Tomb Raider game is a complete lie.
Although I love the original "traditional" TRs, I was disappointed in Shadow as it's nothing like TR2013 nor Shadow.
For being a Tomb Raider (as what a true Tomb Raider always was before 2013 with metroidvania exploration and puzzling):
TR 2 > TR 3 Adventures of Lara Croft > TR 1 > The Last Revelation > Anniversary > Chronicles > Legend > Underworld > Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris > Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light > Shadow > Rise > Angel of Darkness > TR 2013
1.Fully underwater swimming unlike Rise and 2013 that have either a very limited underwater swimming or no swimming at all.
2.Booby traps.(Rise and 2013 didn't have any one other than the one where you have to shoot something in a slow motion.)
3.Far more focus on exploration with much less enemy encounters.(Yeah, collectible hunting is exploration specially if you decide to not use the map and survival instinct at all.)
4.More tombs. Rise and 2013 had abandoned buildings instead of tombs 99 percent of the times.
Shadow also has small tombs known as crypts.
5.An option to fully disable the white paints and survival instinct which make it feel more like real TR game.
6.Puzzles in tombs, that Rise and 2013 had none.
7.Ability to use a grapple hook.
8.Much more useful shops that allow you to sell your items to get money.(which gives more value to the junks that you find in the map compare to previous games.)
As you see, Shadow is much more Tomb Raider than Rise or 2013.(Shadow also has better stealth and combat.)
