If I am facing a lot of them and fear I might run out of ammunition, I sometimes start with pistol and use all its ammo first.
You can also lower combat difficulty to make fights easier, unless you are already at lowest difficulty.
Stock up on the herbs (use as many types as possible, you can always harvest them back later).
For the sake of saving ammo, use arrows on the Yaaxil Archers, so you can use bullets up-close.
Personally, I don't recommend using any shotgun when 2 or more Yaaxil warriors are honing in on you, due to the shotgun's relatively low rate of fire.
I use the rifle that has the highest damage rating (when fully upgraded), the rifle with the highest damage but slow rate of fire can be bought from the Kuwaq Yaku merchant.
If there's only one Yaaxil warrior approaching you, then use the shotgun (so you can use rifle bullets when multiple Yaaxil are closing in). The first shotgun that you receive is the one that has the highest damage rating among its kind when fully upgraded, so I tend to use that when 1-on-1.
