Rope ascender not ascending rope
Why on earth has this been cut? In previous TR games the ascender would take you up a vertically sloped rope much faster than you can climb.
It seems now like it's a relic required only for some optional puzzles.
It's just another thing that makes me feel like they scaled stuff in the game back.
I think once I complete this I'll go back to rise, start from the beginning and complete it again.

This game has definitely been a low point in the series. It's still enjoyable but you can tell that combat was cut (unusable cover, explosive barrels in areas with cover and the likes with no enemies) and that they really cut back on lots of other stuff too.
Hopefully the development and production teams realize that this wasn't the best received Tomb Raider remake and double down on the next one. I would say if the sequel to this fails the Tomb Raider IP will likely be put on ice again for a while with maybe a few utterly forgettable games created in the interim.

But I digress. The rope ascender does not ascend rope. The only time I saw it work was in one vertical bit of the forge. You don't use it to rappel or ascend any of the upward sloped ropes I've come across, what gives? I literally sold a village their stolen goods back to them for this only to find out it's just another type of lockpick-ey tool used to break open doors.

Two things are required for the ascender to work. 1/ you need to use sprint and 2/ she has to be moving foward (head first)

Ah, thanks.
In the previous games didn't the ascender just bring you from point a to point B on a rope fired upwards towards a target?

I'm a bit confused about this, because it does do that. I used pretty often. What I noticed was that sometimes it wouldn't work if the rope didn't have much of an angle and was almost horizontal, but most of the times it would be the other way around, you could ascend with it but couldn't descend by sliding with the pickaxe. What I think you may be experiencing is trying to use the ascender to descend one of those almost horizontal ropes, that won't work.

Wait, this just came to my mind, do you actually press the button that uses the ascender once you're on the rope or do you just expect her to use it automatically?

I'd like to also address this, there won't be a sequel, this was meant to be a trilogy about the origins of Lara. There might be more Tomb Raider games in the future, but they'll probably be their own seperate thing.

The ascender is/has been an interesting tool/toy to use. Once you get it, try facing in the other direction and attaching to it and see what she does. I don't know if in fact this will change the direction you travel (if you follow what I'm saying)

I have been working with other parts of the game and since this topic came up, have not given it much thought. But I will look into it now.

As for this being the final 3 of 3, with a new map due once a month. I think these 3 set the stage for all TR games to follow. If you enjoyed these 3 as I have, expect the next TR game to be more in line with 1 of the 3.

There's a button to use the ascender? I'm using a gamepad (dualshock 3 with SCP toolkit) what do I press, or is it in "controller options"?

This was originally written up as a reboot, rather than an origin trilogy to Tomb Raider 1, 2 and 3.

People will always want more tomb raider so you can expect them to roll out another one. I've not finished the game though I expect it's going to leave some loose ends on which to build a sequel. Hopefully they learn from their mistakes.

My memory is a bit foggy when it comes to 2013 tomb raider but couldn't you shoot arrows into rock walls too with the compound bow? I think this was before the climbing axes though.

The rope ascender could have had another use in this game too (if shadow of the tomb raider had combat, of course) you could shoot people through with an arrow then use the rope ascender to pull them towards you for a knife finisher, or hide them up in trees/hang them up predator style like that skill lets you do.

Great game, but so much unused potential.

On keyboard you press "E" (the standard interact button) once you are on the rope.

My controller is configured as an Xbox controller (even though it isn't), the button to use the ascender is X which it should translate to it being the Square button on a Dualshock 3 controller.

I remember shooting arrows to walls too and it was in Rise, but if I'm recalling it right, it could only be used in specific sections of wood walls.

Many good points you have. I can't help with the use of a controller, as I use KB/M. But in your case it is the sprint command you need. Look in controller options. Yes, the ascender was intro'd in 2k13 and rope arrow's had different use's. I could see where some of that could have been used here and 1 of her skills does address that very tactic. The use of rope arrows in combat opened the door and was alot of fun in 2k13. It's use here is limited but still fun.

The lack of (so called) combat in Shadow is something I don't like to discuss and is better left to the trolls. IMO, it's not the amount of combat but instead how you use the skills and tools you have. That in itself is the chalange.
