check that video about they talk about alot of the settings. But short version HBAO+ is much better than BTAO
Anyway I decided to play with BTAO, that is developer's vision of the game's art. I played through ROTR with plain SSAO because HBAO+ was busted and made snow look dirty as if it was covered in mud. Not to mention the LEGO cracks in walls. VXAO was also combined with HBAO+.
At least in SOTR they fixed that, but should have added intensity option. Gears of war 4 has an AO intensity option and it's great
I can't think of any game besides AC : Unity where HBAO+ actually was better than the standard setting. I even remember The Division having HBAO+ which was so inaccurate it actually had no shadowing under the big city bins. It looked like there was light under them, and the gap between the bin and ground was like 5cm.
