Based on what others have said, (and Mr Geek's examples), it certainly seems like some folks are having some sort of issue with the visuals, but maybe you should try some of the suggested fixes.
They only time the game looked grey/hazy on my end was in areas that were intentionally meant to be grey. And clearly the game looks fine to a lot of other people.
Here are my screenshots: https://www.flickr.com/photos/136832847@N05/albums/72157701729276025
I certainly didn't have any issues with visual fidelity. My only complaint would be that some of the tertiary characters did look a bit dated as Snoopi mentioned.
I agree with you and others that some of the "washed out" look people are seeing could be because of the added use of volumetric lighting/god rays/fog as compared to RotTR. To me it looks more natural but I can understand why some folks won't like it. It can definitely detract from the visual clarity.
I did the Geforce Experience Optimization at full quality as suggested (which pretty much just maxed all the graphics settings to full - thankfully I'm on a factory OC'd 1080GTX so I can still maintain 60+fps maxed out at 1440p) but still had to add contrast in the nvidia control panel from the defualt 50% to 62% to get the game to look correct and clear for me. It looks good now and my screenshots pretty much mimic yours (I even have some captured at the same exact locations in the begining of the game) so I'm happy with it now and I've decided to start playing and enjoying the game past the 2hr return period.
I'm wondering if the fact that my monitor is almost a year old now if I might possibly have to re-calibrate it due to age/color shift or something if I'm finding that I need to add contrast. However even my Horizon Zero Dawn screenshots pulled from my PS4 Pro look perfect spot on, on this display with it's current calibration and have never felt the need to add contrast to any of my other games to get them to look right. If I add the same contrast that I feel that I need to use in SOTTR to keep it from looking so dull and hazy and make it look clear, then even my Horizon Zero Dawn screenshots from my PS4 get black/white crush where otherwise they look perfect and spot on with just my displays current calibration so I don't think my monitors calibration/settings are at fault when totally separate systems look perfect on it.
Final Fantasy xv has received a ton of updates since launch, idk about Nier though. Don't own it.
So that's probably what's happening to me? The washed out look is intentional and I don't like it But if I get rained out of work tomorrow I really want to drag my PC to the home theater room where I have a 4k full array local dimming display with HDR to see what this game looks like on a 4k HDR screen with full array local dimming to see if the washed out look goes away with it because Horizon Zero Dawn looks absolutely amazing on it! Perfection!
It's not the engine it's the people using it. If they are using Crystal Dynamics Foundation engine, which I believe they are, then it's not that old. Crystal Dynamics created the engine for Rise of the Tomb Raider. Crystal Dynamics created arguably the best looking game to date with this engine. Eido's just isn't as good as Crystal Dynamics.
I definitely don't think it's your monitor though (as you mentioned earlier). If everything else looks fine then you could take that out of the equation. It's good to hear that you got it to look good though, but it really shouldn't have been up to the user to fix whatever is going on with the game.
As an aside, I've also thougt about maybe running a long DP cable from my PC to my FALD set (using a One S controller) just to see what the game looks like in HDR. That's a decent amount of work though and I'm lazy. :p
Yes the volumetrics are pretty heavy in this game. That's the fooggy/hazy look along with sun shafts and things. Even when you turn off Volumetric Ligting it's still present at some degree. It's probably why people feel the need to tweak contrast. They even mentioned it in a review, about the heavy use of Volumetric Lighting, not so much as a bad thing but how some people won't care for it. I am fine with it but I also really like seeing the lush jungle setting and enjoy seeing the vivid colors with crisp foliage of these well done textures. I did notice that some areas are more "fogged" then others. Overall it's a joy to be immersed in.
Your game looks like it without Reshade? Never dude. Show me the same location from your game. Reshade is a lightning and filtering tool, i use Cinematic fx snd some other stuff.
but shadow is much better looking than rise. its just kinda inconsistent. tombs and some of the platforming stuff look the best, and the whole ending section is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ nuts graphically speaking (from the volcano set piece to the very end)
Yes the lightning was downgrade, it looks a bit flat. Use Reshade with Cinema FX and it looks like in the trailer on E3.
