Am I going crazy or did they change Jonah's race?

I thought Jonah was black/African descent, but now his hair is different (no I'm not just referring to how he styles it, but the very nature of it's texture), and he's sporting Maori-ish tattoos and refers to himself as an Islander. His nose is less flat and more angular. What did I miss? What on Earth was their motivation for changing his race?

I've played the previous two games more times than I can count, and I'm having a hard time agreeing that he now looks more like he did in the first one. Guess I'll be pulling them out again to take a look, lol.

Keeps changing.. always thought he was some sort of islander though. But his look keeps changing from game to game, noticeably.

This game seems to suggest that he's part Maori, part Hawaiian. It also suggests that he has two homelands.
I'm guessing he was born in NZ and moved to Hawaii where he lost his accent.

he had the look of a hawaiian in tr2013. no he looks like a magreb guy.
not only they changed race but also the face , he has a poop-like face in sotr while he looked cool in tr2013

Hes always been of islander decent, hes ALWAYS had tribal tattoos and hes always worn Mauis hook on a necklace...So you just never noticed im assuming because in Tomb Raider 2013 he had the tattoos and necklace, and he did in Rise too

When I first read this I thought you were mad. Then I pulled up old screenies and I can see that I am the one who is mad.

They materially changed his look for ROTR, but it wasn't as jarring to me as when they changed it back for SOTR.

I know, that was a major part of my confusion! How can a black guy be half-Hawaiian/half-Kiwi?

I had obviously forgotten how he looked in TR and was only thinking of how he looked in ROTR. Now that I'm reminded of how he looked in TR, I can see that the big change was between TR and ROTR, not between ROTR and SOTR.

Still though, he looks less Kiwi to me now and much more Latino than in the 2013 TR. The shape of the nose and eyes are much different.

Just curious why they keep materially changing his look, and I don't mean his fashion choices.

They changed Lara's look, too. Jonah is more active now that he's Lara's sidekick, so he lost some weight and doesn't look as soft as he did in the first game. They screwed up his skin tone in the second game but really, they're working with updated graphics, so some models are going to look a bit different every time.
