Engine?
I have heard that it´s different engine than Rise. But has anyone heard any more details or rumors?

I most likely the same engine. Why would the waste time/money to make a new one?

Why would they waste time/money to make a new one? To make a great performing low level API engine optimized for both old and new hardware looking great on low to med settings and breathtaking on high to ultra settings pleasing fans and.. oh... you´re right that´s not happening.

Same Engine, they could not have made a new one in such short time, lets hope this time is better balanced.

what if it's the same engine as deus ex?
trust me people, you don't want that :D

You damn right. Dawn engine from deus ex not suitable for open areas. Inside building it's run like butter but outside... In night Prague with rain in small street even 40 fps it's problem. I can only imagine what fps would be with Dawn engine in geometry Valley from ROTR. Let's hope for they stick with "Foundation" engine from previous tomb raiders or at least heavy upgraded/ better optimize Dawn engine.

the screenshot should give you the answer to your question. Same shader models same aliasing.

Ok that sounds great xb1x is on gtx 1060 level and I don´t even need 4k
svenoss May 2, 2018 @ 8:49am
anyway you will have shader model from xbox/ps4 so it will be aliased and blurry.

Games and their engines generally have constraints. Particularly if you're developing for consoles (though this does apply to PC's as well of course, just to a lesser extent) where limitations are something you have to keep in mind alot when developing for hardware.

Anyways, if I remember right, Rise of the Tomb Raider was released primarily for semi-last gen hardware. I believe there was only the regular editions of the PS4 and XONE out then. So they'd have had an engine designed to work with the limits of these machines and probably not much further for computers.

Now though we have the PS4 Pro and whatever the hell Microsoft is calling the enhanced XONE they have out now lol. (I forgot what they call it.) So developing a new engine would make some sense as it would make it easier for the team to take advantage of the new hardware and really push the limits of what the game can do and achieve.

Its not really a waste since there is the opportunity to go further. Whilst I'd bet they probably could get away with just releasing a game with the same quality in things like graphics and so on as ROTTR, since it was an outstanding game, they have the chance to take things further with the newer hardware, so why not right?

Yeah this article https://wccftech.com/shadow-of-the-tomb-raider-4k60fps-xb1x/ is a bit misleading. But still doesn´t sound bad.

I haven't bought a GPU for years, ever since the GTX 970 was released. Think it's time to update - I'll get an 1180 and brute force it.
