shadow of tomb raider 360 control - how to sprint?

I am playing the above on my PC using an x box 360 controller. I cannot work out how to sprint, only run. Can anyone advise?

You have to press the left analog stick in order to sprint.

I recently started using a controller and a friend told me most all games like this, you push/hold down the left stick.

I do press the left analog stick and she runs but doesnt sprint. Most of the time run is OK but I have a timed section that needs sprint.

that is the sprint, if your movement speed changes when you push the left analog stick down, while moving on the ground or in water you will move faster.

And you clearly are saying she does run aka sprint, and you're not satisfied with it, that means you need to get better. Just make sure that the speed actually changes when you push the button while tilting the analog stick fully in the direction you wanna go.
