Interface problems

I just started this game, and I've had trouble interacting with certain things in the environment (mostly people but also some items). The interact icon will appear for a fraction of a second, usually while I'm in motion -- either walking or looking around -- and it's hard to react quickly enough to click on it before the icon disappears. It's especially frustrating when I spend over a minute wiggling the mouse around to try to talk to someone, and then get only a single line of dialogue. Does anyone know a solution for this? Something I can change in the settings, perhaps?
