Nowhere have I found that they didn't receive payment.
Infact, I found a large amount of posts saying they did. An example: https://www.reddit.com/r/PhoenixPoint/comments/b0xz5c/why_taking_epics_money_was_the_stupidest/
Considering how this game is released on the Unreal Engine, and how they did a complete 180, it's still not something to put away and will still be considered suspicious.

The few video games specific websites worth reading that we have in France agree to say that this game is average at best. 5/10 on the one I usually read, they also gave 4/10 at that Call of Cthulhu game. Happy to see that some good professional press still exists.
My thoughts exactly, definitely a 5/10 game for the average player, and a 7/10 for Lovecraft fans.
It's janky, buggy, almost broken, but more than makes up for it with the story, dialogues and exploration/investigation bits.
All in all I think it might be the best Mythos-inspired game we got since Dark Corners, definitely better than Call of Cthulhu in my opinion.
If they disclose any information not allowed just to make some customers happy then they get sued for millions.
Doesn't sound like a good idea to go against a NDA and get sued just to make some people happy. They got paid from Epic if not already then in the future whats the difference they took the money signed the deal.
