'Resistance'
So I've been playing through this game and even having played the first game, I have no clue what this resistance thing that pops up is. I can hazard guesses but that doesn't really do me any good, and Google doesn't seem to be much help. Even if, for example, an enemy has a 200% water art weakness, it might still show up with 'resist' if I hit them with Hydro Cannon. What is this and what effect does it have?

If I am right, what you are mentioning is the opponent's resistance to certain status like Faint, Seal, AT Delay, etc

If you were to view the monster stats in your monster guide book or during battle, you should be able to see a bunch of status with % points on the bottom right of your screen, those % points indicates what status are the opponents weak against

So if I were to use "AT Delay" as an example (AT Delay is a status that pushes you or your opponent's turn further back down the line)

A 100% AT Delay means that the opponent is completely weak against it and will always be AT Delayed if you use a character's crafts that inflicts AT Delay (Eg: Rean's Arc Slash, and Fie's Bullet Cyclone, etc)

A 50% AT Delay means that the opponent has a 50% chance of getting AT Delayed

A 0% AT Delay means that the opponent is completely resistant to AT Delay and AT Delay will not work on the opponent and the "RESIST" will appear if you were to use a craft that inflicts AT Delay on them showing you that the opponent is resisting AT Delay and it has no effect on them

Elemental Efficiency indicates what elements (Water, Earth, Fire, Wind, etc) are the opponent weak against

For example:
100% weak against Time Arts (Normal Damage will be dealt when you use time arts against them)
0% weak against Water Arts (No Damage will be dealt when you use Water arts against them)
200% weak against Fire Arts (Twice the normal damage will be dealt when you use Fire arts against them)
50% weak against Wind Arts (Half the normal damage will be dealt when you use Wind arts against them)

________________________________________________________

You should take some time to read the Character's Crafts and arts description to gain a better understanding of the status it inflicts since there are some status that are useful

For example: AT Delay and Impede (Impede prevents you or the opponents from successfully casting arts)

Rean's Autumn Leaf Cutter inflicts AT Delay and Impede
Rean's Arc Slash inflicts AT Delay

Fie's Sweep inflicts Speed Down and Impede
Fie's Bullet Cyclone inflicts AT Delay

Elliot's and Emma's Detection inflicts Balance Down on some opponents making it easier for you to unbalance them and increasing your chances of getting a combat link attack

Hope this helps

Oh really? I thought it wouldn't have been that since Hydro Cannon doesn't have any status effects associated, but it may have been on a turn with a random status effect chance enabled or maybe I had some quartz that enabled a chance for some status effect or other.

And yeah, I know all about how effective status effects are, but it's hard to bother when you can just use Special Curry and Laura/Millium's S-Crafts with Domination, but maybe I'll change my tune if I ever play Nightmare or Hard aha.

Thanks for the detailed answer, anyway. I've only been on these forums a few times but a lot of people are super helpful, this community's really nice.

Nightmare is actually doable, even without NG+. From my own perspective, Trails of Cold Steel series is not as difficult as Trails in the Sky Series.
