The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel II

The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel II

*SPOILERS* New Sen no Kiseki (Cold Steel) IV News.
As a heads up, this post may have spoilers for CS I, II, and III, as it is impossible to promote Sen IV without spoiling the previous games. There may also be spoilers for the Sky or Crossbell games in this thread as, once again, it is near impossible to promote or talk about Sen IV without spoiling all the previous games as Sen IV is the sequel to all 8 previous games in the franchise. Any spoilers for Sen III after the next paragraph will be free game, so I wouldn't advise reading past the next paragraph unless you don't mind Cold Steel III spoilers.

I will try to keep updating this thread as best I can to keep up with any news and even trailers as they come out. As for why I am making this thread: Well there really isn't anywhere else for the Steam/PC community to discuss the game and I know there are some here who have played or spoiled themselves on CS III, so it seemed like a good idea to have another place where Sen IV's release can be discussed. I will also be trying to keep all information given regarding Sen IV here, as I think it would be good to have all that info in one place. As an side: You can also check out the Sen IV thread on the Xseed Forums here: http://www.xseedgames.com/forum/index.php?threads/sen-no-kiseki-iv-warning-sen-iii-spoilers.29378/ (There will be the same kinda spoilers there that will be here, as a heads up: CS I, II, and III, and there may also be unmarked Sky and Crossbell spoilers there as well.)

Final Spoiler Warning: Everything below will contain spoilers for the previous 3 Cold Steel entries and may contain spoilers for the previous 3 Sky entries and both Crossbell entries!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Firstly, there has been a very large interview with President of Falcom, Toshihiro Kondo, shortly after Sen III's release that is "no holds barred" and it's in regards to Sen III's ending and what will come in Sen IV. A translation of this interview was done by Omgfloofy and Gu4n on Endless History (if you are unfamiliar with Endless History: It is the most trustworthy site for news regarding Falcom and is run by Omgfloofy). The interview was so massive it needed to be divided into 2 parts.

I will try to update this thread with any/all of the trailers (including any subbed versions of them) as they become available. Any other new info I will try to keep posted in the comments as it becomes available.

As a final heads up, I will try to mark whether there will be any Sky or Crossbell spoilers to a degree, but it is clear, that with Sen IV, you will be expected to have played all 8 previous Trails games so towards the end I will probably start to mark these spoilers less and less due to it being impossible to not spoil those other past games when promoting Sen IV, just as it would be impossible to promote Sen IV without spoiling Cold Steel I, II, and III.

I know Falcom wants to increase publicity and thus increase the sales of Sen4, but seriously am I the only one here thinks that Falcom spoiled way too much?

Not really? They aren't showing any more then they usually do when promoting a new Trails game. This is pretty much what they always've done. At least as far as I know.

All the stuff they've been showing is probably stuff you learn early on in the game. Falcom knows how to surprise players and bring out the plot twists, so I doubt, even if they showed some spoilery stuff, they wouldn't have a lot more to show in the actual game. They will sometimes show something somewhat spoilery, but not give many details about it to hype players up to see said spoilery thing in the game, but without giving too much away.

Unless you mean the stuff they're showing is spoiling the past games, but then new players shouldn't be looking at the promotional news for the newest game, since all the Trails games have a continuous narrative and story. It's like looking at a preview for a movie sequel without watching the first movie, imo.

It's pretty much impossible to promote Sen IV without spoiling the previous games anyway, like you can't promote SC without spoiling the ending of FC, or promote CS II without spoiling C's identity and the ending of CS I. CS IV is directly connected to CS III, so it's kinda impossible to avoid. If someoen doesn't want to get spoiled they should just avoid threads like this and the promotional material from other sources.

I don't know if it's a Japanes thing, they seems to spoil a lot of story materials when they promote their games. I'd rather going in blind.

Just look at the news and screenshots, we already knew in Sen4 Duvarry is going to be playable, and Shirley is probably going to join Thors II,etc...which really ruins a lot of suprise.

Another example would be Code Vein, if you read every news and promotional materials, you probably know a whole lot about all the characters...

Personally, I like the 'westen' approch to game promotions better. They usually focus on technical stuff and gameplay.

That's understandable. Though if you want to go in blind, you really shouldn't look at things like these screenshots and trailers. Almost every game will spoil something for someone when it gets promoted since, to promote a game, you kinda have to show off the game.

Hmm, they're definitely spoilers but I don't see why Shirly being in Thors is that big a surprise, it would make sense for her if she's guarding Cedric. And that's assuming that's why she's really there. It wouldn't surprise me if she has secret orders.

Duvalie being playable wasn't really a surprise to me, since I was half expecting it given the extreme likelihood of her switching sides after the last game.

In my opinion, the spoilers they've shown (so far) only serve to make me more excited for the game. Falcom are very good at keeping some things as surprises (for example: Lechter being playable in Sen III), though it's true they also tend to show more spoilers than some people would like. With Sen III they were pretty restrained with what they showed, but who knows how much they will still show for Sen IV.

As a heads up, though, I'm pretty sure for Zero no Kiseki Falcom revealed that Estelle and Joshua were playable, for Sen I they revealed playable Valimar, and for Sen II they revealed that Lloyd and Rixia were playable (they also revealed, prior to Sen II, that Crow would meet an unfortunate fate) all before the games released. So if you want to avoid any more spoilers for Sen IV, I would advise against watching the trailers or looking at any more news. Because if, say, Joshua and Estelle (or anyone else) end up as playable characters in this game, Falcom will likely reveal it before the game comes out.

That stuff is kinda the least important thing when it comes to Kiseki games, though. xD

They probably feel like they need to show off story and character stuff to hype up the game, and, while in my opinion, they don't really need to hype up Sen IV since it's already hyped up from the previous games, Falcom are really good at riding the hype train to releasing new Kiseki games (People were more excited for Sen III than FF VII Remake), and with Sen IV being what it is you can be sure they will hype it up like crazy.

...I say that as if they haven't been doing that already, lol. But just you wait until the first PV drops (assuming you want to watch it), I am hoping it will be as epic as the Ao no Kiseki Promotional Trailer. This one, if you haven't seen it (Subbed by Yotaka):

LOL

Okay so... as soon as I finished typing up that last post, I go and see that 14 seconds ago, Gu4n Tweeted this:
So, it looks like we'll be getting news this week after all.

I guess Wednesday onward might be the best time to start avoiding this thread and going dark on Sen IV news, if you still want to avoid spoilers, BeastSlayer. I also remember hearing that either late July/early August is when the PV for Sen IV will drop, so you'll need to be careful around then too if you don't want to get spoiled.

At this point, they mind as well throw Kurt, Carna, Grant, Zin, Dudley, and Arios in Sen 4 while they're at it.

My biggest worry is that Sen 4 will spend too much time trying to tie up all of the resurrected plot lines from 'Sky (Hamel, Phantasmal Blaze), the ones left over from Crossbell, and the new plot lines with New Class VII and the Ironbloods, that Rean and Class VII's story is going to be overshadowed and won't get a satisfactory ending. It very much seems like Sen 4's climax is going to mainly revolve around the stories of the two prior generations rather than giving Rean and friends their just due.

I can see it now:

Final boss/penultimate boss time, the party approaches Rean
Joshua: Hey Rean, remember me from way back when? I was dead inside just like you, but I was saved by the power of love!
Lloyd: It's going to be alright!
Kevin: Justice will triumph once again!
Rean: Who in Gehenna are you people?

Sky's climax gave a definitive resolution to Joshua and Estelle. Crossbell's gave a resolution to the SSS and KeA, but it seems that Rean and the old Class VII won't get a climax devoted solely to them, instead it will have to cater to everyone as a whole. Ideally, I'd have the old storylines tied up throughout Sen 4 and have a conclusion for all of those old characters, and then the game would move on to a special final chapter dedicated solely to the story of Rean and old Class VII that started way back in Sen 1. At least let him die in the company of his friends, having either fallen by their hand or having sacrificed himself for them.

Cradled by Class VII
Rean: I'm... so... so...
Alisa: No; you gave everything for us. I'm sorry.
Machias: You were a noble like no one ever was, one who truly embodied that name.
Jusis gives a smile, a tear rolling down his cheek

cold steel 4 looks insane... jesus christ.
I knew it was only a matter of time. I thought that Falcom would be pulling out all the stops with this game. But indeed, the inclusion of the seminal "twosome" almost steals the show from Class VII; I've no idea how Falcom will give adequate time to every single possible character interaction even in a 120 hour plus game. Oh, well, I'm salivating to find out.

Yup! This will likely be the best game in the series, at least until the next pay-off game in the next Arc.

Well not every character needs a lot of development. Joshua and Estelle don't really need a lot, they will likely have some important scenes, but I think it's unlikely that they will steal the show, especially since, to my knowledge, they didn't steal the show away from the S.S.S when they appeared in the Crossbell Arc.

First look at Sen IV footage! Here is the uploaded video:

Gameplay starts at 15:37 and ends at 22:08.

Here is Omgfloofy's live translation via Endless History on Twitter:
  • "The hosts are Hachi and Junki from the Dengeki PlayStation staff."
    Source

  • "They are currently talking about the trio from this week's character reveal for the game."
    Source

  • "They're talking about a particular silver haired woman from one of the screenshots, as well now."
    Source

  • "They are now saying that anything after this point will be spoilers for Sen no Kiseki III. And Kondo has come up for the interview."
    Source

  • "First two questions are on things to look forward to regarding Estelle and Joshua. Some of these things includes that they're worried about their friends back in Erebonia."
    Source

  • "When asked about if they're going to join the party, Kondo said it seems to be the case. Kondo has also talked about how strong they've become and the decision (and timing) of bringing Renne into the picture now."
    Source

  • "Kondo was talking about Schera in the screenshot- and that she's wanting to investigate the Courageous incident herself. He is now asking about the series heroes coming together and has been asked about other Kiseki series characters showing up."
    Source

  • "The interview has ended and now we're back to the hosts. And we're now seeing our first video footage of the game."
    Source

  • "A force of tanks and soldats are leaving Heimdallr in a parade. Alan is one of the soldat pilots. Civilians are on the sides of the street, waving to the military. "I have to do this to protect Bridget." Rex, is spotted as a camera man in the crowd."
    Source

  • "Patiri and Fiona with Towa's parents. A speech at Dreichels Square with Vandyke, flanked by both Rufus and Cedric. And two large airships over Valflame Palace. Schera is spotted in the crowd at the meeting- this is the screenshot seen, spotted by Olaf and Neithardt."

  • ""Juna, wake up... Juna wake up!" And picture cuts to Juna in school with the rest of Class VII and Cedric's classmates, but wearing Thors Main Campus uniforms? Cedric in class with them, too. Juna's very confused. Black effects on the corners of the screen."
    Source

  • "Interestingly enough, Ash is in the class with them, too. And they're talking about the events two weeks ago. Juna finally agrees to it, saying she must've had a bad dream. Makarov and Mary walk into the class room. Gameplay ends here."
    Source
(Something I need to say: I don't trust Makarov. At the very least I feel there is a lot more going on with him then he lets on....)
  • "They are currently showing off the first of the three books that come in the limited edition set. It looks like a decently thick book."

I decided to finally allow myself to spoil myself and start looking up info on CS IV, because screw it, these games are still great even when you know what is about to happen. Those screens with Estelle, Josh and Renne are just heartwarming, and I haven't even played the Crossbell games for full context of everything between them. God why can't this series be more popular. Not Necessarily Final Fantasy level, but a strong fanbase of around 100 to 200k in the west.

Not Necessarily Final Fantasy level, but a strong fanbase of around 100 to 200k in the west.

Apologies for the long post.

I mean, I'm pretty sure this series has a strong fanbase of maybe around 50k, but I doubt a bigger fanbase would do much. Having 50k or 500k sales doesn't change the fact that these games are huge and take time to translate. It'll take a long time to translate anyway and the only way we'd get it faster is if they did a terrible localization, which no one wants as it would ruin these game.

I guess they could have two teams working at the same time, but that could also hurt the quality or would end up providing too many inconsistancies from translations not matching up. I personally think this series is already profitable enough to justify us getting all the games; it's already confirmed we'll be getting CS III localized eventually, so what we really need confirmed is that Xseed will be the only ones localizing the games going forward, and that we get the Crossbell games localized as well. CS IV will almost certainly be localized if CS III is and we know it will be eventually per comments by Falcom's President Kondo.

I remember when FC was first localized and it bombed so hard most others would say SC would never get localized, that it was "canceled", or that Xseed had given up and were lying about still wanting to release. It did so bad Xseed had to put SC on hold in order to work on other smaller games in order to not go bankrupt and Falcom were considering not even letting them continue the localization of SC until FC came out on PC where it did better than anyone thought it would. Which of course allowed them to make SC a priority again and outsourced some of the work to Carpe Fulgar. And then we got Cold Steel localized on PS3 and VITA and it was a success as well. I remember being very happy when it was announced that FC, SC, and CS I had sold over 350,000 copies and that they considered all the trials worth it and all 3 games a success (even SC).

Yet some people still feel that these games aren't "proftable", despite Xseed saying otherwise and us contiuously getting the games (which wouldn't happen if they weren't profitable.). Now these games are insane to handle, but Xseed have managed to find a way to tackle them and make it profitable for them. People said we weren't getting SC, that we would never get CS I and CS II, that Sky the 3rd would never get localized, that CS I and II would never come to PC, and now that we will never get Crossbell and even some people saying we will never get CS III and IV, yet if we look at the facts, every single one of them had or has a chance of happening, despite some of them being unlikely. And the reason why they happened is because of Falcom and Xseed finding a way to make it happen while still being profitable.

And still, not too long ago I saw multiple people saying we would never get CS III, a few people insulting Xseed for not being able to get the rights to Sen III, someone saying that since they found FC to be boring they were going back to waiting for CS III, and someone even saying that they think we will likely see the PSP version of Sky the 3rd come out next year. And as silly or funny as these may seem to us, the people saying stuff like this actually are serious.

Personally, I would be more than happy if we got another 4 year and 7 months wait before we get any more Trails, followed by Xseed releasing Crossbell and CS III and IV back-to-back the same way they released SC, CS I and II, and Sky 3rd back-to-back. It would allow those who are new to the series and making all these crazy demands (some people think we should have already gotten Cold Steel III localized by now....) to learn about why these games take as long as they do and why they are as high quality as they are and to learn that there are other games in the series they should play.

I think it would be cool if the fanbase got bigger over more time, but honestly speaking, I feel like it's already growing almost too fast as it is. With some people not even knowing that there are games before Cold Steel and that they need to be played to be able to follow along with CS III and IV, and with some people seeing Cold Steel and thinking it's just some "waifu" game or "Persona clone" or something, also there has been a large increase of trolls ever since the Cold Steel games were localized.

I feel as if I went on a 'rant" and that I have made this go on too long, so I apologize for the long post.

I think, as long as Falcom doesn't do anything foolish, we will get all the games localized by Xseed sooner or later. And if we get CS III and IV first, we will have the Geonfront's fantranslations at least.

Sorry again for the long post!

Anyway, you'd want to keep an eye on @Aliseyun's tweets if the Sen IV leaks drop as early as last time (6 hours from now)."
