I should also note that very few games manage to come back from a death spiral like this, the only one that comes to mind was Evolve, and it required a Free-to-Play rerelease to get people interested in it. (Take a look at the chart [steamcharts.com], you can actually see where the playerbase spiked, and then dropped off again as people lost interest).
I'd also recommend not buying this game for it's story mode, as it does nothing special, and it's cutscenes are "alright" at best, and "dreadfully boring" at worst.
