Flower puzzle solution?

I just finished the flower puzzle simply by brute forcing it. How was I supposed to have found the combination?

Nooo! Please somebody answer this question! This is the puzzle on the first proper world where you walk on paintings. There is a plumbing puzzle where you have to repair a pipe then move two dials to water a giant flower statue thing. The dials have various words on and the solution is for one dial to read "hot cup of tea" and the other to reada "winter's night".

When you do that the water magics the flower to life for NO REASON AT ALL!!!

I hate when puzzle games don't make sense so this is driving me mad... WHY?! What in the hell does this mean? Why is this the answer? And how in the hell were we meant to know it? Even the guys in walkthroughs seem to be either guessing or just plain forcing it!

there is probably a solution nearby - none of the "combi puzzles" in this game are not brute force solvable in more than a minute, although I have spotted clues nearby.

The solution is right in front of your eyes. On the puzzle wheel there are pictures of a hot cup of tea and of a winters night, so you adjust the puzzle lever to those two choices and the water gets fixed.
