Haven't seen much of a change in monsters or ressources but I didn't explore far.
It requires a lot of digging, on my seed, so I deplete my food too fast to explore much.
I suggest growing a lot of mushrooms, cooking them on the campfire and then again with the stove. 3 cooked mushrooms = one "Big Feast" which instantly restores 25 hunger so it's great to stock up on them for large trecks, and easier to farm than the "All Meat" meal.
The best part is the longer you let your mushrooms grow, the bigger the yield when you harvest them, allowing you an infinite source of food as long as you replant a few for the next cycle.
Underground level 5-9: insectors (you may find their workbench in those levels)
Underground level 10-14: Meco robots and parasytors (currently no new workbench, but there will be in the future).
Also, more structures, items and bosses will be added into the underground world over the next 2-3 months.
Hope this answers your question. :)
Minimum need an iron shovel to dig lvl 5 underground and lower. Will hopefully (if remember to) update once tested how far can the iron shovel goes.
Iron shovel>5-9
Silver Shovel>10-14
(That's what I found out so far.)
