Two questions [Rooms 5 and 6]
So I enjoyed doing the first two puzzles in room 5 (the enigma stuff) in which the third puzzle is rather confusing.

I get that you will have to use 3 scramblers, I've assumed that the first scrambler is set like it is for the first puzzle...however where does the message come into it? (the part with two letters etc underneath) is that key used after you work through the machine or afterwards?

Also for the 6th room with the binary stuff I've again done the first two puzzles however I'm stuck for the third one. I've looked at the clue in which just says transposition in which I'd gather it's used after converting the binary? Or is the set of numbers used as a key? I have started to think that the numbers are some kind of key based on even/odd however that confuses the matter even more.

I'd like to be able to understand how these work.

-Room 5 Puzzle 3-

Look carefully at both pictures on the hint wall.

Some questions that may help you understand the key:
-Why does it contain II I III?
-What is minimum required information you need to know in order to know the starting rotation of each scrambler?
-What is the meaning of the letter pairings?

As for room 6, I haven't finished it yet.

I hope these questions can help.

I'll take another look at 5.03 tomorrow. I'm thinking that the ll l lll is to do with the order of the scramblers. I've no idea what info I need for the start of it (unless it's the same theory as 5.02 to get the starting order)

Yep. II I III is the order. One thing out of the way. What else do you need to solve the cipher?

What are the pairs of letters in the key? Also, what could 'AEB' mean? Why three letters?

Hint: Look at the first picture in the hint wall. Also look at the steps from input to output in the second picture.

If I go further, I think I might spoil it for you. If you want the answer to these questions, I can go ahead and give them but only if you want me to.

Okay now that I've researched into how proper enigma machines work everything is starting to make sense. Just need to see if I get the bit before the scramblers right.

I'm also still working on 6.3, tried a lot of things but no success so far. The way it's written down indicates that every digit in the first row is giving you some instruction on how to operate on the column below, but I don't know if that is true, since each row starts with 0 1 1, so it would be useless to pick the 2nd, 1st or 3rd entry...

any luck on 6.05?

Okay I'm in the process of setting it all up. However one thing I'm stumped on is the reflector.

yes, weirdly I managed to do that one immediately, even though it's supposedly advanced.

Basically, I followed the instructions that are given, starting from the 16-digit sequence with the two keys. You should swap the first column with the second, and the third with the fourth, and when you shift you should rotate the digits to the right

That comment was for Spoon. The reflector is nice, because it never changes position or anything. It just takes one incoming letter and gives you the outgoing one. And then you have to go back through the rest of the machine.

psim with 6.03:
From memory the hint was transposition, the numbers up the top aren't binary so that must relate to the transposition

Also for 6.05:
I seriously must be barking up the wrong tree here. I assume the number on the left is the encrypted binary -> so i work backwards to try to get the decrypted message and do that twice, once for key YS and once for BX
psim_ Feb 26, 2018 @ 1:44am
Spoon: That WOULD make sense, but I didn't think of that initially, so I went forward and the end result was the correct solution. *shrug*

I guess I'll keep working on 6.3, I tried going in the direction you're hinting at, but no success yet.
Spoon Feb 26, 2018 @ 1:56am
hmmm ok so i got it, for some reason the i couldnt get the logic behind the puzzle:
i ended up trying to get 4 characters by getting a result from YS and BX instead of just rinse and repeat on round 2

for 6.03:
maybe you're not going in the right "direction" im hinting at :P think of 6.05 with the row shift but slightly different

Right, I'm out of ideas for the final mechanised one. Here's what I've tried.

  • Got the first scrambler from the first puzzle, then used 2 and 3 from this puzzle. Then set up a second row with the plugboard switched letters
  • Shifted start positions on top row to A/E/B
  • Shifted start positions on bottom row to A/E/B
  • Shifted start positions on top row to A/E/B being a numerical value 1/5/2
  • Shifted start positions on bottom row to A/E/B being a numerical value 1/5/2
In which yes I bumped the machine to the left 1 time before going through with the first letter.

Curious Duck:
try to find out how to get the machine to get you the first letter as stated by the hint. Then the rest should flow with the normal workings of an enigma machine. Remember the scramblers work like an odometer whereby only the 1st scrambler will rotate until it gets to a certain letter out of the 26
Curious Duck Feb 26, 2018 @ 2:45am
I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong with the plugboard or the scramblers.

As this is the setup[i.imgur.com] I have at the moment. The scramblers have been shifted 1 to the left so I could follow it through.

I don't know what I'm doing wrong to not end up with the first run through being B
