I’ve read their response (in the big text) as making sure the game will always be playable. So if they turn the servers off at some point, then they’ll have to offer offline mode. At least that’s what I got out of it.
And bring an offline mode at this point. You'll keep servers for what, 5-6 years at this max ?
If this is true, then it sounds like they’re trying to correct whatever problems the game has while keeping expectations in check. They can’t offer new content for the reasons provided but they can make the game better and that’s something to be commended on. They could have easily cut their losses and moved on like some other devs tend to do.
I will trust them for now and just see what’s going to happen with 1.7, 1.8 and future updates focused on bug fixes & balance.
Personally I’m fine with a good single player game with some optional co-op/multi player. I don’t want an endless grindy game. But I do understand the players who had other expectations based on the MMO tag.
But they said the opposite though?
About server closure I mean.
I mean what will happen 1.8 though it is vague, no? Maintenance mode?
Very minor updates maybe?
I will echo what others have said that this sentiment is a deterrent to me playing the game anytime soon, even though it’s in my library.
These creature-collector titles are so, so built for handheld playing when you consider the franchise they’re all inspired by, and yet to have a title *require* an online connection to even boot up you are preventing that as a play style. What’s wrong with wanting to play this game while travelling?
I understand, as this post explains the dev vision at length, that they want the game to be a social experience where you can see other people from across the world while you’re playing, and engage with them and be a part of this larger community and economy. What I don’t understand is the decision to make that a requirement if you only want to engage with the game in a single-player way.
I’ll be upfront - I got this game thinking it would be a great Steam Deck game, to play at work or on trips. But I often dont have an internet connection in those situations, and the fact that playing offline isn’t even an option has made the game too cumbersome to accommodate in my gaming time.
It’s clear the devs have a lot of passion and have realized where a lot of their blind spots have been throughout development, and that awareness is refreshing. But there’s no real explanation for why this one popular feature is being withheld (besides “our server costs are cheap so we’ll never shut down”), unless it would require a similarly massive investment like creating a new island?
Frankly, while you’ve gotten the purchase out of me, and you’re not pursuing more monetization so it doesn’t really matter to you whether I engage with the game anymore or not, I think it’s at least worth saying that I, as a player, feel like I’m being excluded from this experience by design and that is very frustrating, and I think from the small sample of this post discussion it’s clear that I’m not alone.
You mean after or with 1.8? After is clear: bug fixes and balances.
With 1.7 and 1.8, the arcade mini games (plus a 4th one), removal of micro transactions, getting rid of FOMO, overhaul many systems to make the game more fun and less grindy. While they’re not being very detailed about 1.8 and the things they focused on in general, it makes sense since it’s further away. But it’s clearly going to be more than bug fixes and balances. That’s what the updates after 1.8 will be.
Very well explained.
I obviously also prefer an offline mode for game preservation. But as long as I can play the game in perpetuity and then offer offline mode when the servers are closed, then I’m ok.
But your point about playing it on a handheld on the go is a very good point. I really hope the devs consider it for players like you.
Maybe I'm too forgiving but I did read this more as a "we thought we could do this and we messed up". Traditional MMOs tend to fail because of how much upkeep they need, and a younger studio may not think of how much effort they need to do for constant updates. It isn't a case of omg our players kept only for a little bit, it was a case of we have to put in so much effort for the tiniest amount of content to even continue having a fanbase
The passes were gross, freemium currency IMO is fine (at least for a game that required as much constant support to maintain a fanbase), but yeah FOMO is a nasty thing to cash in on for a game that isn't super cheap to begin with
On a side note, whenever people blame the dev for shutting down live servers I think it is kind of silly. I understand feeling upset or sad, but most people bought the game realizing it was online only, so eventually servers shutting down is inevitable. Enjoy the time you had and hope they make it offline before they close the curtains for good. I think it is fair to blame a dev for making a game that could be offline online only, but if they say it'll be online only the servers will still close one day
