I'm sure others on here could give you specifics - much has changed and improved from two years ago where certain areas were blocked and some houses were just houses you couldn't get into. Tons of noticeable bug fixing and so on.
Great time to get into it now as I'm sure release will bring an influx of new life into the game who aren't aware of TemTem's existence yet, and those who do may be waiting for a completed game before paying full price to play it.
If I'm not mistaking, the development team are working on end-game features for release so starting fresh shouldn't jeopardize anything important.
