Please stop defending corporate greed,
If this was a free to play game, noone would complain, but it is a full price game, a
successful one.
So there is absolutely no justification other then "give more money".
Starcraft, Guildwars 1+2 and other games are "mmo" and never needet any additional funds to run Internet servers. Do not belive that lie.
A good company with great devs would take some of the Millions they made and give some of it back to the fans, with free content and free mmo to keep us interested, untill they finish the next game.
But it seem money corrupts, and here we see a case of curruption and people/devs changing with it.
And that my friends is common these days.
Starcraft is not an MMO, it's a strategy game and it runs on Battle.net. Guildwars 1 did expansions, guild wars two did expansions and a cash shop. You said you're 40, yet you don't know a thing about what you're trying to run comparisons of, do you?
Now, if you meant warcraft? That's even worse, that's sub fee+expansion fees+charging people for things as simple as name changes/server changers. So yes, it is quite the common practice.
Sea of thieves.
Division 2.
Fallout 76
Rainbow six siege.
Assassin's creed, etc, all have ingame purchases and those are just he ones I could come up with off the top of my head. Oh, they also all aren't free.
Yet SC2, GW and GW2 all had microtransactions. Also battle passes became popular recently compared to how old those games are.
Honestly sounds like don't know about what's common practice (or haven't touched a game in 10 years).
Well, half of them are Ubisoft, of course they have that trash in because Ubisoft is among the worst publishers nowadays. The big Publisher all abuse this, EA, Blizzard/Acti, Ubisoft, 2K. They are all the same corporate mega-blob companies that just use everything to extract as much money as possible without any regard to treat customers fairly.
And yet rainbow six siege is insanely popular/successful. Division 2 is in season 11 and assassin's creed is on game what, 10 at this point? So the point is moot, the system works.
A system always works if there is no alternative. How many huge corporations are there that make AAA games without these abusive tactics? Exactly, zero. People always assume "something works" because everyone has to use it. My gov. also "works", but I have no alternative but to accept it even though a lot is ♥♥♥♥ and corrupt.
If there is no alternative? What? Games have put cosmetics into games for people to get and they still do it, hell Temtem still does it. They also put in special things people can purchase for WAY cheaper than they would be as a solo purchase, that's known as a season pass/battle pass. You are required to play, but if you're going to anyways, why would the cost matter much to you? Destiny two (Free to play.) right, yeah, maybe for the base game, which has sense been locked and thrown into a side campaign. The game requires you to buy not one, not two, not three, but four DLC's just to be on par and have the ability to play with others.
Combine that with a every 3 month, 10 dollar pass and well, hey! What game is one of the more popular shooters on steam and consoles? I think it is Destiny 2 O.O.
Crema is not your friend
I have already explained that popularity means little if there are no alternatives by companies as big as them that can deliver the same quality. If there are just 2-3 big polished shooters that have DLC, MTX and Passes in them, then everyone is forced to play one or the other. That is my point you are not getting. We have no mega corporation that is NOT doing what these mega-blobs are doing.
If there was only soda from coca-cola and Pepsi that sold us their product in dumb plastic bags and no other company was offering us soda in bottles or cans then we would be forced to drink soda with plastic bags.
But that's the thing, there ARE alternatives to destiny. It's effectively a glorified borderlands game with optional PvP. Yet you don't see people flocking to games that aren't actively adding content, do you? That's the beauty of the optional pay system, it quite literally funds the production process. The best part? You do not have to participate at all. You just won't have as much "Bling" as someone else who does, does.
