Here is a useful site that shows where different temtem can spawn. Check out nessla & ganki if you haven't. If you're further in the game you will want to catch a ganki at a higher level though.

sometimes you'll capture some, swap them out with your current set, and push them forward.
It does seem like coop will put a delay in progress unless you truly work cooperatively in having a strategy and diversity in types you play. If you both want to level the same 3 temtem, it could punish you. If you spend many hours in coop, that's 3 temtem that loses out on some potential xp because when 1 dies, you choose from your main 3 and not your complete 6 (if I remember correctly)
you can make it work, but going from coop to solo will put you a little behind in xp, but the coward's cloak can speed up the process of catching them up as well as capturing and using temtem closer to your main 3s' levels
Early game: keep a type advantage chart open, or note that the circles under tem tell you super/not effective if you've caught the target.
