not having played pokemon in forever nor ever been in IV trainer, so i can't answer that.
but seeing how upon evolution your trait changes to 1 of the 2 traits the evolution has seems to be quite a weird design choice. cous you don't have a choice which trait it changes into.
In pokemon some pokemon evolve and get different abilities. The ability they get is tied to the previous ability they had rather than being random, so if you want a specific ability you just needed to get the prior evolution/egg with the ability that corresponds with that.
I can't say for sure, but I would of thought they would do the same thing in this game.
These traits are set by temtem, the same way they are in pokemon, so just because your current temtem has a certain trait, doesn't mean its evolution has that same trait.
