Why is there no official english translation?

It seems like a big missed opportunity. Seriously, way more people would buy this game if it would include one.

I'd rather leave the game untranslated and rely on fanmade patches than risking someone butchering the translation, because then the game would be stuck with it.

better yet I'd rather actually learn japanese, lol

ZUN stated in a past interview that he wasn't interested in having an official translation. If I remember right the reason was a mix of not wanting to trample fan interpretations and not wanting a translator to set things in stone. Remember - ZUN himself doesn't know English.

Then how about shipping the game with a fan translation? I doubt it would hurt. The company who publish it could contact the fan translation creator/s

it's not a company, its made/published by one drunk asian man.
From what I know about him I doubt he will implement eng translation.

oh, didn't check that this was published through a publisher, sorry.

You can contact them but I doubt the company isn't big enough to care and hire professional translators (unless this game sells well in the west).

I'm sure that they'll never hire fan translators even if they are willing to work for free.
I don't think ZUN doesn't want some random weeb translating it and misinterpriting, altering the quotes, he would want someone he can trust.

I'm not sure but I doubt the publisher has a full-control on deciding whether to add a translation or not (they can persuade ZUN, but can't implement it unless he agrees on it)

I've used Locale Emulator to get rid of the Mojibake on Japanese games.

It works well on all Touhou games i have, but it doesn't seem to work for the text on TasoFro's games, aside from Immaterial and Missing Power and Hisouten(soku) somehow...
Any text that isn't image-derived remains mojibake.
