UV Seam shows when using Sharpen filter
I'm trying to use the default Steel Gun Matte material, but everywhere I have a seam, the sharpen filter ruins the look and creates this white line. It happens on all materials that use a sharpen filter.

no sharpen
with sharpen

As far as I can tell it only happens on the base colour channel. I found some similar posts on the net but that didn't provide a solution. How do I get around this?

I can't tell if you have baked the Mesh Maps, (Curavature, position, normals, World Space, etc...) And Sharpening may require these to work properly, also Sharpening may be determining your UV seams to be like a Weld Point. (If you know what I mean, like 2 pieces of metal joining and being welded together... Just suggestions)

They are baked, I don't think you even can apply a smart material wihtout baking first?
I'm not entirely sure what you mean by weld point.

close up

In the close up you can see that its like a stair effect, definaltly looks like artifeacts to me and not an intended effect. the same appears on the bottom of the UV map in the color channel, though not for other channels oddly enough

you can even see that the grunge draws right over the seam like it's not there.

Looking at the sharpening picture and where the edges are are on the seams, it looks like this..

This is what I mean by weld points, as if one of your materials is picking up the seam and applying sharpened edges to it, like they are welded.
Another thing you might want to try is overspraying the seams

Doh, Forget what I said about overspray, dummy me, it's a solid fill, but, walk through your masks and see if it may be something there, especially if you have an edge generator applied.

The effect is coming only from the sharpen filter.
Let's say it is this welding you say, how would I go abotu fixing it?
It goes away even when chaning the blend mode to somethign other than passthrough (whqt teh steel gun matte material is set to), but it also doesn't look as good... I guess it's close engfouh for what I need but I'd still like to fix this properly

What is it you're trying to sharpen? Without seeing the actual project and your layers, it's hard to give any real suggestions. I'm more or less just making stabs in the dark here.

I've created a cylinder (which is what your object looks like) and brought it into SP as an OBJ. I can't create the situation. The black triangle here denotes seams of the side and top of the cylinder. I've thrown masks, smart mats and masks, generators and filters at it and I'm not getting the glitch you're experiencing along the seams.

Without knowing what this object is or how you have your stacks set up, I don't know where to go with recommendations

I've tried importing the object with edges set to smooth and flat. I have also separated the cylinder lids and given them separate materials. I can not reproduce the situation.

Let me get some screens, , but I didn't change anythign on the material.
The stack is ONLY the "steel gun matte" amerterial that comes with SP by default. on a cylinder

Added them to an imgur album[imgur.com]

The first is the material and object, It's a silencer for a gun so basically a soda can.
the seams apears simply from using the material and you can se that when I hide the sharpen filter the seam goes away

The final two are a close up of the sharpen filter and how it's only affecting the base colour
Hope that helps?

Ok, Stepping through the album helps, let me see if I can reproduce the problem here and I'll get back to you in a bit. I have appointments today, so it may be later this afternoon (for me I'm on Mountain Time) or later this evening before I can get to it. But I suspect it may be something in the SmartMaterial (Steel Gun Matte) this is being Sharpened and causing the problem.

Can't wait :) and even if it doesn't lead to anything, thanks for sticking around :D

I'm working at a 2k resolution, just in case that has an effect too

Ok Roknar, I left the project settings at Default (1024), but Let's see if you can see my album and if it answers your question.

https://imgur.com/a/q7G90Fx Let me know if you can or can't see this (I may have to change the visiblity. I don't use album much here.)
