Groove Coaster - Controller Troubleshooting Info
To all our Groove Coaster fans,

We do apologize that it seems some are having issues with their controller of choice not working from the get go.

Below is some general information that we hope will help resolve the issues you are experiencing.

Please perform the following steps in Big Picture Mode and restart Steam once before running Groove Coaster.

Enabling Controller Support
  1. In Steam client click STEAM from the top menu.
  2. Select Settings - Controller - General Controller Settings.
  3. In General Controller Settings make sure your controller of choice PS4 / Xbox / Generic is checked on.
  4. Steam Controller users, ensure the Wireless Receiver USB device is plugged in and controller is turned on before starting Groove Coaster.
  5. Be sure to restart Steam once after completing the steps above.
  6. Refer to “manual_en.pdf” file (link below) for further controls details.
    https://steamcdn-a.akamaihd.net/steam/apps/744060/manuals/manual_en.pdf?t=1531785652

Checking / Changing Controller Config
  1. With controller plugged in / Groove Coaster running open the Steam overlay with Shift + Tab
  2. In overlay select Controller Configuration
  3. Screen should change to “Groove Coaster for Steam Official Setting”, screen with active controller displayed.
  4. From this screen you can make changes to your button configuration for Groove Coaster.

UPDATED - 07/31/2018 - Controller button not responding workaround.
We would like to help present a work around to the issue involving some button inputs not responding while playing.

The main cause of this issue has been narrowed down to the analog stick not being recognized as having returned to the neutral position after use.

Please follow the steps below for the temporary workaround to this issue.
  1. On the Steam browser, select “Steam” in the upper left corner.
  2. Select the following, ”Settings” -> “Controller” -> “General Controller Settings”
  3. ”Selected Controller” -> “Calibrate”
  4. From here please adjust the dead zone slide bars for the L / R analog sticks. Moving the slide bar to the right will increase the size of the neutral zone.

*Dead zone slide bar settings will differ by controller.

Hi there!

We hope the information helps!

Other users are saying try to perform the controller setup in while in Big Picture Mode. Also be sure that the game is not running at the same time.

Saw some other posts where people say that after attempting setup, restarting helped get the controller working.

Also having issues with Xbox one controller. Tried troubleshooting, no luck so far. Gonna try manually mapping to keyboard buttons as a workaround.

Hi there,

We got word from the developer.

Perform the same steps without Groove Coaster running.

  • Go into Big Picture Mode
  • Controller Settings.
  • Xbox Support checkbox is checked.
  • Exit settings.
  • Start Groove Coaster.

I tried doing that with my controller, it works, but the slide hits very weirdly. It sometimes works, sometimes it doesn't.

I have a weird issue with my xbox 360 controller while playing this game and i'm not sure what is causing this, but most likely it's how the game handles the controller's input.

So some of the gameplay involves scratch notes and diagonal flicks, which isn't really practical with face buttons and the d-pad, so I use the joysticks for those. However after the scratch/flicks with the joysticks, the d-pad will fail to work unless i use the joysticks again, sorta like an on/off switch.

Also, randomly the d-pad won't work, requiring me to re-plug my controller to get it working again.

(edit: now it's happening to the right joystick as well)

I have tried all of the suggestions here and neither my Steam controller or Xbox One controller work at all in the game. Controller support for both of these are activated from Big Picture. Nothing but my keyboard works. Very frustrating.

Same as Martha above. Every other controller games is working fine with my PS4 controller but keyboard only for Groove Coaster.

I don't know if this will help anyone else, but for some reason, my controller problems went away when I unplugged my other controller. I usually have two controllers plugged in, but for some reason, this game didn't like that. Now my 360 controller works fine.

Yeah this tutorial didn't help. Been using my PS1 controller in big picture mode fine, but this game doesn't work at all with it.

Just add a native support for gamepads like Xbox. Use the Steam extended support it's definitely not the right way.

Yeah using that solution works (atleast for me) but we are just emulating a keyboard. I feel scammed when the store page say it has full controll support.
