X6 I feel is too hated overall. It's not a great game, but it can be enjoyable. The level design is often too bullcrap, though, and while I will often give excuses for much of its content... Gate was just frigging idiotic design, and so was Sigma. Sigma you have to literally try to fail, even on Unarmored X. They're the polar opposite of each other. Gate was too hard for what it is, and Sigma was too easy. Sigma was first boss easy, and Gate was "You have no floor HAHAHA, ISN'T THAT A GREAT TWIST?!"
Also, I think they tried to debuff Zero or just make him different with his completely different sword style, but wound up accidentally buffing him instead. Some of it due to bugs, but not entirely.
X7 on the other hand, has the brilliant idea to have not one but two ranged characters in a game where you cannot target crap with the right analog stick despite that idea being normal by the time it came out. And even poorer enemy placement compared to X6's worst enemy placement.
Limiting the parts you get to just 12 spread out over three frigging characters and you can't choose who gets what short of picking up certain Reploids with certain characters. That, my friends, is freaking insane. It's the logical conclusion of the "Some reploids give you a heart tank on pick up" bullcrap from X5 and X6.
I had honestly forgotten how bad X7 was, no joke. I was thinking "Oh, it was bad but not super duper bad. Some enjoyment could be had." Oh god no, I was so freaking wrong. I don't know how I tolerated it the first time. Maybe my rage issues were lesser when I was playing the game(Entirely possible for real life reasons). It is, by far, the worst game in the series.
While I am ranting about X games, X5 feels like the most pointless damned thing ever. Almost everything good about it was in the engine, which X6 did better. X6 even did a better version of "Do a specific thing and get access to the final stages if you wanna go challenge yourself"! Yeah, you gotta do more, but it's still quicker than relying on RNJesus for the Cannon shot to work. X6 is also bizarrely in one small way more forgiving: you can't force the bad ending on yourself just by ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ up and entering stages too many times.
X5's wacko way of picking endings would be better(but still wackier than a character from Animaniacs) if all eight parts guaranteed the Cannon shot to work... But they don't. It's always up to RNJesus.
That's just not fair, folks. It's one thing if a stage design is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥(Looking at you, Metal Shark Player. You shoulda stayed in Hell and I am always glad to send you back there!), it's another if RNG screws you out of the proper/good ending and the only thing you can do is reload and keep spamming reload.
Plus reusing the Yellow Devil is a sin against all of humanity, even the parts that do not give a damn about video games. Reusing X1 bosses was a bad idea too. I get why. It was intended to be the last game in the series, and had callbacks for thematic purposes. It doesn't work when they're kinda mishmashed together. And a callback to an MM boss is just bizarre in that context.
On top of all of this, it's harder than it has to be. It falls into the same tired old Mega Man trap of SPIKES EVERYWHERE in one or more rooms that doesn't work. You know what Mega Man game doesn't have a spikes everywhere room that everybody loves? MMX1. Sure, it has its fair share, but not a literal spikes everywhere room. X6, which I gave a lukewarm defense to, does it too. It is guilty too. I will not deny this. So does X8, a game I also like.
But X6 also has more interesting weapons than X5, better armors(Screw the Gaea Armor for reals) overall, a better parts system... I don't get why X6 is so villified and X5 given a pass. X5 commits much of the same sins. Tar them with the same brush, people.
X5 also has some bullcrap going on with the bosses. Most of 'em felt harder than they had to be. X6 bosses feel about right, as do TBH most X series bosses. I'd say X5 and X7 have the only bosses that have Severe Bullcrap Disorder going on with their bosses overall. The bear boss(I dunno what they renamed him) in X5 isn't too bad, but he's like one of the only ones who isn't too bad. =\
The less said about X7's bosses the better(Outside of the aformentioned Severe Bullcrap Disorder). God, I hate them so much. Beyond the hate/trolling driven memetic phrase of "BURN TO THE GROUND", they're just bad. Nothing else to say. Sometimes, you can't dissect what makes something bad. Sometimes, it just is. And X7's bosses? They just are. May they all rest in Hell. Special place in it for that ****ing Kangaroo who gets to have two life bars because he's just so ****ing special and amazing and wonderful.
-Bubble Crab's music reused (X2)
-Spiral Pegasus/Skiver is basically Storm Eagle (X1)
-Dark Necrobat/Dizzy is basically Shade Man (MM7)
-Yellow Devil reused (including theme song) (MM1)
-Rangda Bangda reused (including song, too) (X1)
-First Zero Stage is basically Quick Man's (MM2)
-The weapon to stop the lasers from said level
-Parts of Sigma Fortress from X1 is reused
-Final Sigma is basically Gamma (MM3)
This is just what I could remember now. There's a fine line between referencing and copy-pasting
And to answer the OP, X7 is worse. The Hyenard fight is hilarious, though.
X6 is my favorite in the series, believe it or not.
Also the cheap deaths they have sometimes, X7 got me infuriated many times because of that.
Essentially what I did was save some reploids, die, save, continue.
Just to "save time"
X6 was mediocre, but still fun fast-paced action, boss fight was kind of okay.
But I personally hate X6 more. I mean, with X7 they at least were trying something new. With X6 they managed to spectacularly mess up what is another standard MMX game they had done multiple times before.
Good criticisms of X7: Terrible camera, terrible level design, terrible sound/music, terrible writing ("Promise me you will only use these for good X. PROMISE ME!"), uninspired gameplay... Basically everything that could cripple a Mega Man game and a 3D game wrapped in one. They don't even have sound effects for picking up items. The game feels like it's early alpha or something. I honestly get Earthworm Jim 3D vibes from it, where I want to like it for the franchise but I just can't.
You simply have to gid gut.
Better than touhou level at least
X7 I will never ever play again. Did it once just to say that I did it. The only good thing about it are the Code Crush opening theme and the sigma themes.
...You mean X6 has the same controls as the entire series has from 4 up? Hm.
