As long it won´t become another X7 (BURN TO THE GROUND!) it could be great. They could also use X9 ( and maybe X10) to close the gap between the X and Zero series by using the Elf Wars as the new storyline.
Wrong, the X series is the Coninuation of the "Standard" MegaMan Story.
To be honest, the canon was thrown out of the window since X4. There's no explanation of how Dr. Cain died, why all of sudden there's Repliforce to spice things up and how the hell there was a Colony up in the space ready to collide with Earth. There are some mighty conveniences through all of these entries. This is why I play Mega Man X only because of gameplay, the story is a mess.
And by the way, there is a cliffhanger in X8 in which, by finishing the game with Axl in Hard Mode, you can see that there's something iffy in Axl's helmet due to Lumine's battle aftermath.
