What if your stats are tied?
Generally on a stat check, if the 2 stats are tied that means I win ether way, but I failed at the end of an event today. Did they change it or did I get the stat wrong? I mean I was looking at a guide that said the event was smart vs charm and they were both 7.

Sometimes stats in the guide are incorrect. Not sure how tied stats work either though

We still have no idea how ties work. Sometimes, you'll win, sometimes, you'll lose. My personal recommendation is to never have ties. It doesn't take much time to get your stats to the required level for a prom date, and for secret endings, the numbers don't really matter, as long as they're not too low.
So, if you have a tie, break it. Break it before it potentially ruins your secret ending.

I've been taking notes for a while to try to figure out exactly how the stat checks in the game actually WORK, and I think I've finally ruled out the possibility that you have to choose the higher of your stats between the two choices you're being presented. It seems instead that each choice has a certain stat threshold that you need to be above to pass it, although I'm still not sure if it's an all-or-nothing threshold or if random chance plays a chance sometimes (like whether having 6 charm might give you a 50% chance of passing a certain check). It also seems that the two choices for an event can each have different thresholds; for instance, for the fourth and final "cult ring" event, I passed the bottom-choice smart check with only 4 smarts on one run, but failed the top-choice money check with 8 money on another (both were week 3 evening on full-length multiplayer games). So, short version, it's possible to get an event where if both your stats are high enough you'll pass no matter what you do, or where if both your stats are low enough you'll fail no matter what you do; and it's even possible to get an event where you can pass the choice based on your lower stat but you'd fail the choice based on your higher stat.

How much money did you have when you had 4 smarts?
How much smarts did you have when you had 8 money?
If the answer to the first question is below 4 and the answer to the second one is above 8, you've not ruled out the possibility that you have to choose the higher of your stats at all. All you did was prove it.
