How to get past the little medicine room?

I did the red paint in the glass room. I go back to medicine room. The door at opposite end reveals color patterns. Nothing I do seems to select or affect the patterns. Then I activate the sandman and run along the red path but he catches me and game over. Am I supossed to actually beat him to the exit, or is there something else I need to do? Thanks
