Any Re-translation Mods out there?
I somehow doubt it, and it wouldn't make sense unless you were playing with Japanese voices anyway, but the dialogue in this game can be really, REALLY poor at times, and it's littered with grammatical errors such as the incorrect spelling of "your" and "all of the sudden" on top of a few others here and there.

It would be nice if companies could stop hiring inept people that can't even spell properly for what's supposed to be a professional product, not counting the obvious incorrectly translated things littered all over.

From what I can tell, it's mostly* main story scenes got a final editing pass, so a lot of secondary lines are hastily translated with the intention of polishing it later and this didn't happen. As a result, sometimes the characters, especially random NPCs, will spout weird nonsense that hasn't been proofread yet.

So I feel you, but I don't think it was necessarily ineptitude in this case so much as a rush to meet what was nearly a simultaneous worldwide release on the Xbox 360, something that was really uncommon with Japanese games at the time. It's definitely stuff that should have been cleaned up for the remaster, though.

Yeah, I noticed that as well. The main story is passable I suppose, but side dialogue and other things can be downright laughable.

I'm unfamiliar with the original X360 release. Is this a consequence from that release? I could have sworn I heard something about this version being redone in some way regarding the dialogue.

The new content from the Japan-only PS3 (Director's Cut or whatever) version was localized and dubbed, albeit with a different VA for Yuri for the additional lines. The overwhelming majority of what's here is just the script for the original English Xbox 360 version, which got rushed to meet a relatively simultaneous worldwide release.

By and large, when Vesperia reads well, it reads fairly well, but you can tell it didn't get as long in the oven as it needed with less than a month between the JP and US releases compared to closer to a year for, say, Tales of the Abyss.

For the record, It was handled by the same folks who worked on most of the other English Tales titles, 8-4 and Cup of Tea Productions - they're very competent, but weren't necessarily given the time they needed with this particular title due to an unfortunate combination of circumstances.

Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if there was even a little pressure from Microsoft in there somewhere, since Vesperia was a timed exclusive for the platform.

I see. That's unfortunate then. Well, I suppose what's done is done, but like you said before, it would have been nice if they went over the script and cleaned up the rough bits for this release.

It's super unfortunate about the new voice actor too. I wonder if that mean the lines for Yuri were all redone or if it's some monstrosity of dialogue mixing both voice actors' lines. That would be awkward.

It's the latter. Yuri's original lines (voiced by Troy Baker) are in the Definitive Edition just like they were back in the original version of 2008. The new lines (voiced by Grant George) are spliced in between wherever necessary.

The reception of this was mixed. Ask 5 people and you'll get 5 different opinions on how bothersome it is. You'll hear anything from "This game is unplayable now!" to "There were two different VAs?"

Good lord... I was half joking when I said that. The thought of there being 2 different actors, making everything inconsistent alone is enough to put me off. That's absurdly unprofessional. 2 actors for a single character, messy translations, and poor grammar... What a disaster, and a shame.

I don't think it's a deal breaker though, I remember berseria having the same problem in a few lines, especially by the end of the game but I don't think it's that big of a deal, honestly, I think is understandabe given the amount of dialogue these games have paired with the time they're given.

"All of the sudden" is just a translation of a Japanese phrase that doesn't work well in English no matter how you translate it. It crops up a lot in games with more literal translations, especially visual novels.

That's not the issue. The issue is "all of the sudden" is incorrect. The correct way to say it is "all of a sudden".
