Report a translation problem
(make sure you're seeing PlayStation button prompts in-game, as this indicates that a DInput controller is being used)
As a last resort, go to the controls settings screen. Clear every button assignment that's already there (both for roaming around and battles), and then remap them manually. Write down the original mapping before doing this if you want to stick to the default controls.
I don't know why it does that, I don't have any problems with any other game.

This will map all your Pro Con inputs into a virtual Xbox/PS4 controller (a bit like the Steam support thing, except Windows sees this as an actual controller), which in theory, should play a lot nicer with the game.
I feel you, my controller worked in any other games just fine. But for some reason, it didn't worked proprelly on Vesperia. It saddens me to tell you that, but I had to buy another one to play this game.
