How they work?

They are earned by performing certain acitons etc. in boss battles. I would look up how to do each one as the trophy for completing all of them, has to be done in one playthrough.

How do you know what actions you do without looking up a guide? Magic lens?

Most of them give you a hint. The first one against Zagi for example, Yuri tells Estelle to stand back, and that's your hint that Estelle should not take damage.

Then later, the plants on ehmeid hill give you a hint before the boss battle.

Does anyone know if accomplishing secret missions gives you anything other than achievements? I've gotten a few, but I want to avoid spoilers and so I'd rather not look up requirements for any. I don't mind if I don't get them, but I wouldn't like to miss out on anything important gameplay-wise by not doing them.

Thanks!

They give you +20 Grade each, which is the main appeal. That's a lot of grade you don't have to farm later. But that's for New Game+

Cool, thanks!

+10 Grade(or was it +20?) and you get an extra item reward that won't be normally obtainable for a while, whenever you complete a Secret Mission. Some of the SMs are easy, some of them are nasty difficult/annoying.

Rip his 2nd Zagi one I don't think you were given a hint.
No choice but to look up a "Secret Mission" guide there.

Doesn't Yuri tell Zagi to cool his head or something before the battle? Or someone mentions not to fall off the boat. Hmm...

Welp, considering me and my boyfriend fought this 10 minutes ago, I didn't see anything mentioning it before or during.

This guide is pretty good about trying to avoid spoilers.

Just save often and read areas you recently completed if you don't want to look ahead at all. I'm not that far into the game, but the author tends to highlight missable stuff and sidequests in blue boxes.

I wouldn't worry about them on a first playthrough, you can get them on a new game plus run and the grade can be made up easily with 10 mins of end-game rita grade farming. One of them requires a side quest to finish beforehand and is ridden with spoilers.

Even the guide I linked can't avoid those spoilers?

That one is fine from what I read because if you do the full guide follow you won't know which quest it is.

What I did on my first playthrough was, fight and beat a boss without looking up any info. If I did not get a secret mission message, I'll load it up again and I'll google what the mission was.
