Learning altered artes

Do you have to hit enemies with altered arts to learn them or can you just find some enemy that doesn't attack much and spam them in the air?

There's a lot of skills in the game like Dispersion, Alembic, Gale etc, you equip one or a combination of those and an existing arte will change into an altered arte (Until it's used enough times, after which it will unlock as a permanent altered arte while leaving the arte it originated from usable). I recommend using this site to know what skills you need and what artes they change.

I think you don't need to actually hit the enemies. Altered rates are learnt by raising the Altered Arte usage.

Fixed: 100 times for meele and 50 times for magic.

You just need to use the arte, does not need to connect to an enemy. You can just put yourself into manual mode and spam until it has been learnt if you really want.
