Your options are to constantly enable and disable it with designated button, or use gamepad, in which case combat will work like in souls games.
You can also disable locking on boxes in the options.
Now I've NEVER played any previous Gundam games, console or otherwise, so New Gundam Breaker is my first experience of one, also the first Gundam game on the PC, especially on Steam which makes it easy to get. I know the reception for the game has been luke warm at best, but I've personally been enjoying it.
The roster for Gunpla/Suits to date is 128, with more on the way with an upcoming content update. It's a fair selection of suits, though granted games like Gundam Breaker 3 have more, I still point to the fact that as "I" am new to this, the selection is decent, and I look forward to more suits and more maps. Even more story content I hope.
The game mechanics aren't bad, but aren't something to write home about either. It's functional, it does the job, given the game is a port from the console version. What is appreciated is the added options, such as targeting of crates on and off, and addtional PC options which help those with keyboard and mice, which I use.
The setup mechanics I'm REALLY enjoying! The ability to build your personalized Gunpla, and then some, continuing to create or go for pure builds, is VERY nice Unlocking Builder Parts in single player allows for further customization, with the option of turning the effects on those parts on, or off, making them purely aesthetic if one wished. I do wish though, and I use the word WISH, that the parts were broken down into more sections. Currently we have Melee Weapon, Ranged Weapon, Head, Body, Arms, Legs, Backpack, and Builder parts. I would loved if arms would've been seperated into Shoulders, Upper Arms, Forearms, and Hands. Same with Legs, I wished it could've been Waist, Upper Legs, Lower Legs, and Feet. But I digress, the system is still very nice.
Graphics are fairly impressive! I can run practicaly everything at max/ultra on my Nvidia GTX 970 when I read that the game supposedly needed a beefier card. I maybe only encountered frame drops during ingame cutscenes in the final score story mission when alot of particle/wave effects are seen. I should note though that I do run into runtime errors/crashes. The client I'd say is about 90% stable, with the odd crash. Again, not perfect, but for a port it's fairly decent.
The story mode is a light J-RPG, with choices limited to personal responses that may, or may not, effect the course of the story. It deviates when you play the storylines of the different relationship partners you partake in their story. I'd say one of the girl's stories is 'questionable' given the context of it, but it's kept fairly light and most of the stories are 'sweet', though a couple are goofy and one makes me cringe going "Is this person insane?" But I suppose that's the whole thing about the story, it's a parody of itself.
I personally cannot comment yet about multiplayer, though I have heard finding other players is hard unless you have friends with you to form premade parties, and going up against the AI in multiplayer requires a full human player team. It is unfortunate, since you can then only go up against the AI in single player, with a couple of limited maps.
Which brings me to perhaps one of my biggest criticisms; Map Selection. The PC release has Special Mission 02 which has you and 2 AI allies, go up against 3 enemy AI fighting in a storage room map. There are multiple quests that pop up, mostly part collection and enemy elimination, but sadly, no mobile armor or perfect grade bosses. And it's only the one map. Map variety comes from the single player story otherwise. It would've been nice to have options to pick the map we want, and what quest types come up, for added variety.
That said, it's possible more maps will come around with the content update, and the fact future DLCs and content will be FREE, I think is critical to keeping me, as a player. Companies like EA, who expect you to pay an arm and a leg, for playing their games when they treat it as 'live services' is a downer. This game, with a moderate/fair cost, and free DLC for content, I think is a life saver.
If I had to rate this, based on me as person playing a Gundam game for the FIRST TIME, I'd give this a 6.5 out of 10, possibly 7 out of 10. It's an attempt to bring Gundam games to the PC on western shores and I applaud, and I can only hope the developers learn from their mistakes and improve upon it. I know there are other players who've played past Gundam games and will tell me I'm either insane or should rate this lower, but that's based upon their experiences, not mine. Again, as I've stated, this is my opinion, as they're entitled to their own.
That's my 2 cents, typed out.
You have less than a week to submit your gunpla before entries are closed.
At this point, I think the best game we have a chance at getting a port of in the near future would be Gundam Battle Operation 2. It’s the only recent Gundam title that I believe would be a smashing success on the PC platform. It’s also easily one of the best Gundam games ever made.
PS2 version of DW Gundam 2 works flawlessly and has an undub patch.
PS3 version of DWG Reborn allows you to play through some levels without freezing. You can complete CCA scenario and its mobile armor bonus mission safely.
I've already got DW:G 1-3 for Xbox 360. I'm just disappointed that I wasn't able to play Reborn.
I agree, I would really like to see that one as well.
And as for there not being any more DW:Gundam games, I'm sure we will have one in the future, but just not any time soon. Bandai probably will wait until there are more Gundam series released before they consider another one.
That to me suggests the franchise has been shelved, in part because Reborn didn’t sell as well as previous titles. This is especially true in the West, where the game was only available via digital download on the PS Store. It also was the first game in the series not to have an English dub, meaning Bandai Namco didn’t have high expectations for the game overseas.
Don’t get me wrong. I’d love a Reborn 2. I think the gameplay has always been superior to the Breaker games. The only thing it doesn’t have is the customization. I just don’t realistically see another DW Gundam being developed, especially since KT has moved onto other licensed anime series.
Like I said, it's probably because Bandai hasn't released very many new Gundam series since DWG3 came out. Aside from Iron-Blooded Orphans and Gundam Thunderbolt, it's been reboots and the re-release of Unicorn. There just isn't anything new coming down the pipe to add to a game and make it fresher for the audience.
To be perfectly honest, I’d be happy if the story mode was just a retelling of all the various UC series in detail. Reborn did that for Mobile Suit Gundam, Zeta, CCA, and Unicorn. It was easily the best campaign mode any of the games had.
A season pass could cover the alternate timelines, such as Gundam Wing, G Gundam, IBO, 00, etc. Reborn already did Seed and Destiny.
