Complete Timeline

It has been a long time since I posted a theory or anything related to these games. However, after reading through the Freddy Files as well as playing through Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria Simulator, I felt a need to put in my perspective of what's going on. For reference, while I did not get any recognition for it and I do not believe anyone read the post, I did post a theory before it was at least popular of Purple Guy being the main character's father in Five Nights 4, as well as Purple Guy having a daughter. With that being said, I want to present my perspective on what the final timeline is for these games, in-depth, start-to-finish.


My timeline begins as many others probably do, sometime in the 1970's. A young man named Henry with at least one confirmed daughter is likely drafted by or helps create Fredbear's Family Diner, given that his later animatronic designs heavily adhere to the Fredbear brand. Some time after the diner is opened, they are targeted by William Afton. After feeling presumably threatened, Henry builds The Puppet animatronic to police the store and specifically guard his daughter (seen in The Puppet's minigame where the only child that is ever his is Henry's daughter). However, this fails in some way or another, and Afton murders the girl. From there, we know what happens. The Puppet escapes his box, finds her dead outside, and is possessed by her spirit.

Because of this, Henry is incredibly emotionally distraught and the Fredbear location loses so much business that Afton manages to convince Henry to work with him. He also buys the Fredbear location and all the rights to the brand, creating Fazbear Entertainment, Inc. (Springlock suits are also probably proposed by Afton at this time, though the development takes until Five Nights 4). During this time, Freddy Fazbear is created and gains notable popularity. He remains one of the more popular characters.

Some time before Five Nights 4, William Afton devises and the 'Funtime' brand of animatronics, designed to capture children for him to kill. At some point, his own daughter Elizabeth is killed and posesses the Baby animatronic, marking the second (and completely unrelated) posession in my timeline. The Funtime animatronics as well as their own location are scrapped after one day of operation, and William Afton's mind truly cracks from this loss.

Henry's involvement in the series becomes more ambiguous and it is likely he left the company behind after his disgust with the Funtime Animatronics. He definitely left at some point, but it's hard to judge when, as the animatronics continuously evolve.

Over the course of Five Nights at Freddy's 4, you play as William Afton's unnamed youngest son. Throughout the game, William's seclusion from losing his daughter is taking a toll on his family life. He likely uses some design choices from the Funtime Animatronics as well as Chica's acquirement to start a new store: Freddy Fazbear's Pizza. Of course, he eventually uses either this store or a Fredbear-branded restuarant to commit murder. Again, it's not too clear on this aspect. The point is, the crying child from FNaF 4, following the final minigame where the newer Springlock Fredbear suit bites his head, dies and posesses that suit. Unfortunately, because of his own death, the suit he's posessing gets scrapped. This leads him to become ghostly and ethereal; not behaving like the rest of the core animatronics.

While William's murders are never discovered or at least never get him into trouble, Fredbear's brand loses all credibility and has to shutdown permanently. Meanwhile, the odor from Freddy Fazbear's Pizza gets that shut down, as well. Afton eventually reopens the restaurant with the newly redesigned Toy Animatronics.

Michael Afton, William Afton's son, is a notable figure introduced around this time. Many speculate that he uses the alias of Fritz Smith after his scooping in trying to undo what his father has done. I, however, believe Fritz Smith is, perhaps, an agent or even an alias of Henry. It is difficult to place Michael Afton's age, but he owns his own living space and is old enough to have a job by his appearance in Sister Location. However, given the assumption that he is older than he's acting (as scaring your brother with a mask is pretty childish), the timeline fits.

In my timeline, Fritz Smith is a separate character while Michael Afton is, at that current time, experiencing the events of Sister Location (likely living in his own former family home while doing so). Michael, following his father's instructions, begins a search for the Funtime Animatronics. His desire is to free his sister. Not from her animatronic, mind you. His sister seems to have been twisted to follow in her father's murderous footsteps, and Afton seems to have used Michael to physically get her out into the real world again. Sister Location ends with Michael Afton first becoming scooped and housing Ennard, and then Ennard leaves him. Michael somehow survives and returns to life, sending a message to his father: "I'm going to come find you".

Meanwhile, Afton's antics with trying to capture more children backfires when he accidentally causes an unrelated incident in his newly rebranded Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria joint. Someone gets attacked and bitten by an animatronic in the infamous bite of '87 after investigations of his murders lead him to tamper with his work. Eventually, on the seventh night, someone presumably sabotages the Toy Animatronics to make certain they cause no more damage. This is perhaps Michael Afton trying to free the spirits of the dead children after he realizes his father's nefarious goals. Perhaps Fritz Smith is simply a separate character entirely. However, through Smith's meddling, it is commonly believed that all of the children are freed.

Fast forward to Five Nights at Freddy's, the original. Not much has happened apart from William Afton bouncing around and eventually reopening the store along with Michael Afton following him around and keeping him from doing more harm. It is here that Michael Afton encounters the spirits of another set of murdered children, as well as his brother. He eventually tampers with their programming to find the safe room and kill Purple Guy (hence the Shadow Freddy) but cannot do a complete job. Thus, he gets fired and abandons the project altogether.

It is likely a few years later that the minigames of Five Nights 3 occur, with William Afton becoming Springtrap and the remaining dead children being freed. Another thing to note is that between Sister Location and Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria Simulator, Ennard ejects Baby from the collective. My personal theory is that Ennard rebuilds a shell in the guise of Freddy Fazbear while Baby rebuilds her own shell.

In Five Nights at Freddy's 3, I believe someone wholly different, perhaps Fritz Smith or even a recovered Jeremy Fitzgerald, take on the guard position at Fazbear's Fright. This is mostly due to the fact that Michael Afton, no matter what his goals are (help his father kill, kill his father, free dead spirits) has no reason to return to the franchise until after the first shift of the character, as Springtrap arrives on Night 2. The place is eventually burned down by either the guard or The Puppet in a rather grand return, but Springtrap survives.



Finally, we come to the final game. Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria Simulator.
Given that William Afton is missing, Henry likely takes control over Fazbear Entertainment. He decides to put an end to all the suffering and destroy all five of the remaining souls in one fell swoop. He first tries to call Michael Afton, but from how Henry addresses the player during the game's ending, it is likely a different former protagonist showed up. He expresses that he left a way out for the player and that the player was meant to be bait, but he wasn't the volunteer Henry expected. Despite all this, and with the help of the L.E.F.T.E. Animatronic he built to capture his daughter/The Puppet, Henry finally succeeds. Springtrap's quotes of finding the call 'interesting' but obviously fake shows that there was supposed to be better bait to keep him specifically around. His last remaining son, perhaps. Fortunately, William Afttrap is a sociopath who doesn't care who he kills so long as he kills. Henry then kills all six by burning down the new Pizzeria: Himself, the player, Elizabeth (Baby), Ennard/Some Unfreed Child (Molten Freddy), his daughter (Lefty), and Willian Afton (Springtrap).




Thus, my (admittedly imperfect) timeline of events is complete. The story is open enough for a canon movie about Michael and perhaps one more animatronic, but the rest of series' questions seems to have been answered and the main timeline seems to have come to an end. I would like to say that this timeline is merely my opinion. If you do not agree with it, that's fine. If you do, that's great! And remember, IT'S ME

Michael Afton, the shambling corpse posessing his own body? Or a different Michael? It's possible Michael Afton is actually the one to show up at the Pizzeria and buy it given that, canonically, the player character actively helps Henry despite how obviously dangerous the animatronics are. However, there's no concrete evidence as to whom we play as in Pizzeria Simulator, other than that Henry intended for someone else to take the position and that there was a way out planned, but the player plans on dying with the restaurant.
