How to protect R&D progress from rule changes?

I've hit the point where I was warned that rules may change next year and I should protect some progress I deem important. Now there is indicator in the R&D menu saying I have 7 weeks to do so. However there is no tutorial exactly *how* to do this and didn't find any options in-game.

How do I choose a tree or even just a part and enable it protected?

Won't dare to move forward until I know I'm not gonna mess things up by just ignoring the heeded warnings...

You just click on the componets just like you would to upgrade them the first place.

It told me at the start of the weekend at sochi. By the end of the weekend I had earned enough to claim all but 4 upgrades. they're really cheap especially if you've got the moral boosts at 20% from claire's interviews. I am making sure to get them all completed before going for new upgrades, but I'm not worried at all that I'd lose any work.

You have to spend resource points on the orange upgrades to adapt them to the next season, usually it costs about 250-300 each

Yeah I realized that not all are affected. If some parts are effected then the color changes of those particular parts.
