There's this thing, when Marshal King dies and his heir is a Marshal who's not currently busy, they should normally just inherit the whole army. I wonder if there's something in the game that makes the army vanish to re-appear with new commander, but as it is King going on a Crusade instead of dying, it just goes all wrong.
-I could get all the units back from the mercenary army for free (a lot of time passed before I did and they didn't move). Seems like they were some kind of loyalist mercenaries so I could just come with a marshall and put the units 1 by 1 in the new army.
-The captured land would be given to me (which was nice). But, when the crusade ended (victorious), my selected marshall became a rebel (as his goal was fulfiled or something like that), so be prepare to fight your own marshall (which profits from perks AND your tradition effects, since he initially belongs to your kingdom !)
In case of victorious crusade, you would trade a marshall against lands : better check how much the target has if it's only one it's probably not worth it, unless you're at a point where you produce enough book to quickly level up a new marshall.
The only times i had my knights become rebels were when a famous rebel was on the map and they joined him.
