How can I become the pope?

My cardinal has been passed over for the position of pope again and again. Is it random? Is there anything I can do to improve my chances of having my cardinal become the pope?

There is an element of randomness to it but.... don't tell anyone I told you this...... you can kill the other Cardinal Elect with spies...

Yup, and having more faith in your faction seems to help. Also whenever possible take the crusade offers (unless your king has no kids then its risky!)

What if I took over Rome? Poland, Germany and Hungary were at war with me so I had no choice. Myc cleric is always busy with taking over towns or sharing culture.

every catholic kingdom would most likely declare a war on you. at best just remove all relations with you
